Marlins Series: 2-1 vs Marlins
The Mets took care of business vs. Miami this past weekend. Going 2-1 and looking solid. Senga looked great once again. I got the chance to see him in person on Saturday and that Ghost Fork was on full display. He dominated the Marlins for the second time in a week. That is not easy to do. A guy with no Major league experience and facing a pesky lineup two times in a row. The advantage goes from the pitcher to the hitter after facing them before. After a shaky first, he settled right down. Sunday’s game was an obvious punt game for the Mets having used the pen on Saturday and Carrasco going Sunday. Carrasco was once again awful. He is washed up, that is all.
Padres Series: 1-1 vs Padres so far
This Padres series has been fun to watch so far and very very stressful. Max looked solid yesterday. He went through 5, 1-hit innings but issued 3 walks causing his pitch count to soar. His command was off and yet his stuff was perfectly fine. His breaking pitches looked sharp but in accurate. People are saying his velocity is down from last year, which is true to an extent. His average is down, however, his max velocity is the same. He has adjusted his whole career and I have no doubt he will adjust once again.
Summary:
This team is good. It has not reached its potential yet. We saw that last year. It has some major problems with power and therefore consistency at times. The injuries are hindering the Mets to an extent. Justin Verlander is due to return any time now and Max looked solid in his third start. I sincerely hope Brett Baty is the Mets third basemen this time next week. LFGM

It'sindeed Baty time,and Vientos time and Mauricio time. They can't do any worse than what we've been watching. Escobar can't hit and he's a statue at 3rd. Canha is wearing thin also. Mauricio to 2nd, McNeil to left, please.

As much I would like to see things evolve, I can't see these changes until May.
Definitely not on the west coast trip.
And... I wish they would send down the.overmatched Alvarez and replace him with Perez
Recapped Points
1. This current 2023 installment of the NYM is obviously struggling, mainly due to key player injuries, and the overall underproduction of their main playing roster in general. At present, only Starling Marte and Jeff McNeil are batting over the .250 mark. Sure it's early, but this is not 2022 so far.
2. I mentioned very early in preseason, that I could see possible negatives developing here to the Mets more veteran SP. I said then, "It's important to get both SP Denyi Reyes and SP Jose Butto ready to come up to start to possibly offset veteran injuries. Denyi Reyes is currently up with the Mets and relieving well. While Jose Butto is 1-1 starting in Syracuse, with an 1.86 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and was named the International League Pitcher of the Week. Kudos out to Jose Butto.
3. The Mets may soon need to send Carlos Carrasco down to Syracuse, to regroup himself. He's a really good veteran starter and he will succeed in so doing this. I have no doubt at all about this. In his place, I might call up Jose Butto, and see how he does.
4. I was never a huge fan of 34 year old lefty starter Jose Quintana. He's an 89 win - 87 career loss pitcher. Never once had a big win season, 13-9 in 2019 being his personal best. To me, hard to bank on this.
5. David Peterson although good, has not really matured into what the NY Mets needed him to consistently be. He's currently 0-2, with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP. David still has the promise, but until he can deliver it consistently I would leave Tylor Megill (2-0, 1.64 ERA) in his starter spot and send David to the pen to ramp himself back up. Plus, let's be honest here, the current Mets bullpen could definitely use a convincing lefty reliever. Maybe that is what David is. We'll see.
My rotation suggestion might be this: 1. Max Scherzer 2. Justin Verlander (once walking again and ready) 3. Kodai Senga (Can we clone him yet Steve?) 4. Tylor Megill 5. Drew Smith or Denyi Reyes. Denyi may just have grown into his MLB legs. As a possible another option, Stephen Jessie James Nogosek.
Mets got four hits off of the Padres young starter Ryan Weathers yesterday. The win brought Weathers' ERA down to 5.23. See my point with bringing up Baty (.391 BA), Viento (.333) BA, and Mauricio (.361 BA) all of which homered yesterday in the loss to Scranton. It's actually a no-brainer. It is the very infusion of hitting that is missing right now here.
The Theory on Veteran Players over Youth
To me, it's overhyped. It is more of a managerial insecurity than anything else. Maybe in the final dance it should take precedence, like in the ninth inning with a pinch hitter. But otherwise, I want out there playing the very best baseball players my team has.
i.e.: The last time these NY Mets won a World Series, now almost forty years ago when coolots were still in vogue, and "Cheers" was the best show on television. Okay then, think of the player personnel on that '86 team. Keith, Gary, Ray, Wally, Ho-Jo, Foster, and Maz as the veterans. But it was not just veterans. There were excellent younger players that help bring the trophy home. Players like Strawberry, Gooden, Dykstra, Mitchell, McDowell, Darling, Aguilera, and Myers. In other words, it was the combination of really good veterans and really good younger players. It was never just a veteran team alone.

We do not want as fans, another 2021 season.
