Box Score

PORTLAND, ME – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (0-2) fell to the Portland Sea Dogs 2-0 at Hadlock Field on Friday night. Portland has taken the first two games of the three-game series.

The Sea Dogs (2-0) scored a run in the fifth and sixth inning. In the fifth, with runners on first and second with one out, Ceddanne Rafaela grounded into a force out at second, but an error on the return throw to first allowed Elih Marrero to score from second to put the Sea Dogs up 1-0. Portland tacked on a run in the sixth on Corey Rosier’s two out RBI single to center.

The Ponies again didn’t go down easily in the ninth, as with one out Rowdey Jordan and Brandon McILwain were both hit by pitches to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Rio Gomez came in to retire the last two batters to earn his first save of the year.

Binghamton starter Dominic Hamel, making his Double-A debut, allowed just one hit and no runs over three and a third innings with four walks and seven strikeouts. Portland starter Shane Drohan (1-0), Theo Denlinger, Brendan Nail, and Gomez combined for a three-hit shutout. Drohan allowed just three hits and one walk over five innings with five strikeouts.

Luke Ritter continued his hot start getting on base twice with a single and a walk. He has been on base four times over the first two games, including a home run in the season opener Thursday.

The two teams close out their series on Saturday afternoon with first pitch at 1:00 PM and pregame coverage getting underway at 12:45 PM on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

Postgame Notes: Each of the first two games of the season have been decided by two runs…Rumble Ponies pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts on the night.

This team does not seem to have any hitting talent.

Hamel a little wild but you have to be highly impressed.

Binghamton looked like a weak hitting team coming into the season. 2 games in, very few hits.

I did notice Brooklyn almost had a quadruple double yesterday. Over 10 hits, 12 walks, 15 Ks, "just" 9 runs. THAT team can hit! It is loaded.

Syracuse was called for cold weather last night. But next weekend, they are in Scranton. Average high temperature in Scranton next Fri-Sun? 83 degrees.

Rudick hit his 2nd HR in 2 1/2 games and bas 6 RBIs for Binghamton. If he adds a power dimension, he will be a real prospect.
