All Mets teams are up and firing, as the baseball season has now launched.
Where are we at?
THE DEFINITION OF DREARY:
Not hitting. The Mets are upholding longstanding Mets’ tradition by hitting a meager .208 after 7 games. The Mets were just 26th in hitting in spring training, too.
Dreary, dudes. No wonder they’re 3-4.
IS MAD TURNING TO BAD?
Max Scherzer is not short, but he is just short of 39. He just gave up 3 quick HRs Wednesday, that no doubt made some Mets fans mad at Mighty Mad Max (while Jake dominated, just saying).
At that age, one must keep one’s fingers crossed.
Max effort from Max may not be Max enough.
Let’s compare for a moment…
In his age 39 and 40 seasons, Tom Seaver was 31-22. OK, Terrific.
In his age 37, 38, and 41 seasons, tho’, he was 21-40. Tom Horrific.
Max going from Mad to Bad would be Sad. Fans prefer to be a Tad Glad.
PITCHING QUALITY:
Most any team that loses Edwin Diaz and a Verlander, and has a seeming Max impostor, needs a ton of hitting. As is often the case, though, hitters outside the Mets’ core 5 are slapping it. It would be stunning to see the non-core Mets offensive players be more offensive and ,hence, not be so offensive.
ON BASE, AND WAY OFF BASE:
Several fans on Facebook want what remains of Daniel Vogelbach, after his off-season weight loss, IMMEDIATELY AND SUMMARILY BANISHED. Funny that at the end of Wednesday’s game he had been on base 6 of 14 times. Maybe those fans should be banished instead. .429 is mighty fine.
RONNY MAURICIO:
Spring training and AAA season, thru Wednesday? 16 for 55, 6 HRs, 16 RBIs, and turned 22 earlier this month. Happy birthday, Darryl Mauricio.
Future star. Perhaps near future.
LONG TERM INJURIES:
It will be interesting to see when Ryley Gilliam and Bryan Metoyer return from Tommy John surgery. Both were operated on roughly a year ago, Metoyer’s slice and stitch being slightly less than a year back.
Gilliam got drafted in the 5th round and started his minors career guns-a-blazing, but then became highly ineffective at higher levels, then needed the surgery. It will be interesting to see if the High K Gilliam returns soon, when he is cleared for games.
Metoyer was all high Ks and high walks. Let’s see how this former 40th rounder fares when he returns.
Matt Allan? 2024 will arrive and we’ll see. And Oca became Acher.
Cole Gordon, Connor Grey, and Oscar Rojas are also charter members of the Injured Wing Club, as is Cal Ziegler, who got chips scoped recently.
Switch arms, problem solved, right?
Bad elbow? God gave you two elbows, didn’t he? Use the other one.
Syracuse had a 6.28 ERA thru Wednesday. Where have all the hurlers gone?
GETTING OLD, AND KEEPING THINGS SHORT:
Looked at the St Lucie roster list. One guy born in 1998, 3 in 1999, EVERYONE ELSE IS 2000 or more recent. Mack and I combined have more years on this planet than the 6 guys on the St Lucie infield list.
Aside from age, one of those 6, Jett Williams, is listed at 175 pounds…and 5’6”. I guess he shrunk. 9 hitters in the St Lucie infielder/outfielder/ catcher roster list as of Wednesday are under 6’0”, to make a long story short.
Before I leave, has anyone calculated the Braves’ magic number yet?

Apparently, Narvaez is hurting and Alvarez coming to NY in case Narvaez has to go on IL.

Let's face it, the Mets have 4 PREMIER hitters... Pete, Jeff, Lindor, and Marte
They have two more BELOW ALL STAR ADEQUATE hitters... Nimmo and Cahna.

True. But Vogelbach, despite his Staub-like speed, has a .396 OBP since joining Mets. Reasonably effective. Average speed would help, of course.
It doesn't get any worst than the last 3 games and of course we have the highest payroll in Baseball. Have we ever gone 19 and 0 in 2 games and 26 and 6 in 3 which is just awful and couple that with the scary truth and I'm sure we can't handle this truth: we were totally outplayed by the Brew crew offense, defense and of course that ugly BP display to blow Wed. game. I count this game as #1 on the list of "We lost cause Edwin had to play in the WBC and got injured" Now I know there was no guarantee we would have won the game but ED would have gotten us to the tenth and as important a game as it was he could have probably pitched the tenth as well. Bob Klapisch is probably already writing the sequel to The Worst Team Money Can Buy. Look I know I'm ranting but us oldtimers who have been here since the beginning have seen this too many times before and it doesn't end well. Has anyone heard anything about JV who was supposed to miss a start or two....yeah right and now Narvaez is probably heading to the IL as well. O.K. I'm done for now Opening Day is here fingers tightly crossed. LGM
