Top 20 RHP on Draft - #7 - Will Sanders

Will Sanders

RHP South Carolina

2022 stat line:  10-ST, 6-3, 3.54, 53.1-IP, 54-K, 11-BB

2023 stat line (as of 4/3) - 6-ST, 2-1, 5.17, 31.1-IP, 37-K

Mack - Sanders started out this mock season as the second top right  handed starter, but has faltered after giving up 30 hits in 31.1-IP. On addition, he has walked 12.

Not a great season, but not a death sentence. He's a very good  pitcher that I still have going in the second round.

 3-3-23 - Keith Law’s MLB Draft 2023 Rankings: -

#13 Will Sanders, RHP, South Carolina

Sanders is 92-96 mph with a plus slider that has power and gets chases below the zone, along with an above-average changeup that gives him the mix to start. The fastball’s light for its velocity, and he doesn’t have the command of a Lowder or Dollander, but he should go in this second tier of college arms that starts with Lowder.

2-27-23 - 2023 MLB Draft Preview: College players to watch -

Will Sanders, RHP, South Carolina - If Will Sanders sounds familiar to you, that is because he is a player I talked about coming out of high school in Georgia back in 2020. The 6’6 right hander is up to 215 pounds and still has a little room to add more weight to give him some projection. Presently Sanders doesn’t have a plus pitch, but he does have four that project as all above-average with solid command. He represents a kid who a team could see promise in getting into a system, adding a little more strength to, and seeing if he could just bump things up a slight amount to really have him take off. Like Lowder, he represents a mix of ceiling and floor considering his arsenal and ability to throw strikes.

Will Sanders

South Carolina

Sanders has the massive size and stuff to headline a rotation at any level. He's got the mid-90s velocity and consistency with the fastball that scouts like to see, though to this point, he's had a hard-time missing bats with the pitch. Sanders' go-to out pitch has been a solid slider with good shape and great consistency. He's also got some of the best feel for a changeup at the top of this class. Developing a more-effective fastball is the most important move for Sanders in his immediate future.

1-22-23 - Top 25 Breakdown: No. 23 South Carolina

RHP Will Sanders has a chance to make a run at the Golden Spikes Award if he pitches up to his potential, and he could also surge into the top 10 picks of the draft. Once a lanky and projectable 6-foot-6 freshman, Sanders has added about 15 pounds of good weight since the end of last year, and his superb front-line stuff should be even better with the added strength. The Gamecocks think he’ll sit at 95-97 this spring along with a swing-and-miss breaking ball and changeup. Wimmer is the closest thing South Carolina has to an established star in the lineup; he’s a plus-plus runner with good whip in his righthanded swing and the ability to hit for average as well as power. If he can show a little more plate discipline and make a smooth transition to shortstop, he could also climb into the All-America conversation by season’s end.

23. Cleveland Indians: Will Sanders, RHP, South Carolina

There is some physical projection remaining which Cleveland likes and the 6-6, 215-pounder should have improved stuff after entering their development system.

26. New York Yankees: Will Sanders, RHP, South Carolina

Big Will Sanders is a 6’6″, 215-pound righty with incredible stuff. Every year he’s improving and should be a top pitcher selected in 2023. His fastball sits in the upper-90s and has natural drop. His slider is developing into a nice finisher pitch, too, and his changeup has come along nicely since freshman year.

In any draft, there aren't many college arms who truly profile as an MLB starter. Sanders has the prototypical tall, athletic frame and clean delivery to go along with a mid-90s fastball and he throws three pitches for strikes.

 30. Seattle Mariners

Will Sanders, RHP, South Carolina

Sanders oozes projection. His long, lanky, 6-foot-6-inch 210-pound body can pump 97 to the mound with ease, many scouts expecting there’s more to come. He’s got one of the better changeups in the class, and flashes a solid slider in the low-to-mid 80s. Sanders is yet to miss a ton of bats with his heater, but Seattle has done well of late taking pure arm talent with loose, whippy athleticism on the mound and transforming it, accelerating their draft arms into their monstrous ceilings (Gilbert, Kirby).

 14. Will Sanders, RHP, South Carolina – Coming out of high school in 2020, Sanders was a projectable righty a lot of scouts liked. Now, with two years of college ball under his belt, he is still a projectable righty. At 6’6”, his fastball has a heavy downhill plane on it and it can get up to 96, but sits more 92-94. He has a swing and miss changeup and a solid slider giving him a quality three pitch mix to go with a body that projects well as a starter long term. He still has some physical projection too, so this would very much be a pick based on upside rather than floor as he is a high ceiling, low floor prospect.
