I’m back from my annual Thanksgiving jaunt to Northern NJ and Patchogue, NY. Probably the last time we do Thanksgiving on L.I.
Took us more than 3 hours to get back to Jersey. We did stop by Uncle Giuseppe’s and Balthazar Bakery to stock up for the holidays. Spent way too much.
It was an
exciting weekend. Out of nowhere, the Mets signed Frankie Montas to a two year
contract for a whopping $34 million. You would think that we should be able to
extend an offer to Sean Manaea for a couple of million extra.
Personally, I
would have preferred making an offer to Walker Buehler, but let’s see what
happens. I hope the pundits are right and the next major signing is Burnes.
That would give us a much improved starting rotation and ensure we are
competitive regardless of whether or not we sign Soto. The next couple of weeks
should be revealing.
Got to say I’m
envious of the likes of Paul Adams, Tom Brennan and Reese Kaplan who never seem
to run out of thoughtful posts.

Take Walker Buehler to Uncle Giuseppe's and he'll only want to pitch for the Mets. Glad you had a good trip.
My brother called me this AM and said the Mets appear to be interested in Clay Holmes. But as a starter. He'd love him as a reliever, but not as a starter.
The flurry of signings ought to be vary, very soon now. The Soto Sweepstakes appear close - let's call it a Soto Photo Finish.
If we signed Montas for what we did, my guess is Manaea wants something like 4 years, $75 million (I could be way off). And pitchers are so fragile, making a deal like that unattractive.
It would be interesting to see someone grade all the big pitcher FA signings since 2000, noting who among them was actually worth the money. Not all guys have rubber arms like Bartolo Colon.
Buehler would be a nice addition after having the Dodger suffer through his injury recovery. There's no question about the caliber of pitcher he was before the surgery. Manaea would be welcome back as well and under $20 million per year seems a bit of a bargain given what a scrub like Montas was given.
and back before the DH Bartolo's bat was a factor as well. Soto make your choice already and lets get the ball rolling. I don't see Sterns signing Burnes but would love it. He just seems to love the "finds" when it comes to pitching and of course signing Soto or not will alter his direction for sure.
I saw a site that projected Manaea at 3/$60. Sevi at 3/$51. But it also projected Montas at 2/$22. He signed for 2/$34, much more money. So it is entirely possibly Manaea will go for 3/$75 and Sevi at 3/$65. Which is a lot of $$. I really think there should be a claw back of pitchers' contracts over 2 years, if they are on the IL more than 20% of the time in those 3+ years. SO many pitchers get hurt for extended periods. But get paid as if they are not.
We know the Mets have the budget for some big signings, so I would not be surprised if they decide that Manaea is a must-have. The delay may be in how the Soto contract is structured, which could determine how the Manaea contract is structured. The excitement builds....
