MACK - The Sunday Report - Where Will David Stearns Watch The Games?, Payton Prescott, Mike Baumann, Jett Williams, Eli Serrano III, Carson Benge

Where Will David Stearns Watch The Games?

Come on, you didn’t really believe that Moneyball bullshite that Billy Bean would never watch a parent baseball game, did you?

Well, it was true.

But this is about the last comparison you can make between Beane and Stearns,

Right now, Stearns may be the most hated person in New York City. At least, in Queens. Fans are, well, fans. Trade away the players they love and be ready for the backlash, no matter how much the act of trading this individual makes sense. Trade or not sign four of the key players on this team and, if the Mets were a Pirate ship, Stearns would walk the plank and tossed into the shark filled brink.

My guess, he will have his car drop him off quietly and as close as the entrance allows, until fans get wind of this and start gathering early to scream at him. He will then immediately be sent to his private box to await game time. No hanging out behind the Citi batting cage.

My other guess is his away travel with the team will increase. Other team’s parks will become his sanctuary. At least, until “his” team begins to win more than they lose.

2027 looks like a lonely year for David Stearns, but I predict, in the long run, it will be the beginning of a long and successful tenure as the Mets President of Baseball Operation (POBO).

                                  Peyton Prescott

The 5th round pick by the Mets last year was 21/yr. old (will turn 22 in May), 6-0, 200-LB, RHP Peyton Prescott.

He was drafted out of Florida State University (FSU) and was awarded a $197,500 under-slot signing bonus. Quite the decent amount for someone who went down with an elbow injury in the 2025 NCAA Super Regionals, resulting in TJ surgery.

I currently have no update on his rehab program or any estimate when he will be able to start pitching.

Pitch Repertoire (Pre-Injury Arsenal)

Fastball:

Primary pitch, averaging ~96 mph and touching 100 mph (triple digits reported in college bullpen sessions). Features good life and ride.

Slider:

Mid-to-high 80s mph, considered average to above-average with sharp break.

Splitter:

Mid-80s mph, average grade, used as an off-speed offering with dive.

Curveball:

Low-80s mph downer breaking ball (mentioned in some reports as part of a broader secondary blend).

Scouts say his game is built entirely around high velocity pitches. They also projected him in a future relief role.

His stuff drew attention despite middling college results (e.g., 5.15 ERA in 36.1 IP at FSU in 2025), as the Mets targeted high-upside velocity in the draft.

(Re-checked my sources. There is nothing being muttered about this guy in camp so far. Other pitchers don’t even recall seeing him in rehab. Does he really exist? Guess we’ll find out when pitchers and catchers report.)

                                  Mike Baumann

The Mets signed 30-year old RHRP 6-4, 240-LBS, Mike Baumann to a minor league contract.

MLB Career -  -0.5-WAR, 15-6, 4.95

2025 -  Yakuit/JPEL-CL:   27-apps, 0-3, 4.15, 1.58, 26-IP, 17-BB, 28-K

Pitch Repertoire (Based on His Last MLB Season in 2024)

Baumann primarily relies on a five-pitch mix, though he leans heavily on three pitches:

Four-seam fastball (primary pitch, ~40-41% usage): Averaged ~96-97 mph, with high velocity (often touching triple digits in relief). It features good extension but has been hittable at times.

Knuckle curveball (secondary pitch, ~33-34% usage): Thrown hard at ~88 mph with significant 12-6 movement; often described as his best breaking pitch.

Slider (~24% usage): ~92 mph, with late bite and primarily 12-6 movement; generates whiffs but can lead to fly balls.

Changeup (occasional, ~2% usage): ~89 mph, used sparingly as an offspeed option.

Sinker (rare, <1% usage): Minimal deployment.

His arsenal is velocity-driven with power breaking balls, making him effective in short relief stints when commanding well, though control issues (high walk rates) have been a recurring challenge.

In scouting reports, his fastball rates as plus (60 grade), slider above-average (60), and curve average-to-plus (50-60).

                              Jett Williams

Running From The OPS                   @OPS_BASEBALL

Jett Williams posted a 136 wRC+ while slugging 17 HR/34 2B and collecting 34 SB. We saw him increase his Pull% this season while posting an identical 9.9% SwStr% and a slightly lower K% (22.9%). The 22-year-old has proven he deserves MLB playing time in 2026.

MACK –

Frankly, I have no idea where to place this gem. Sources say that he has begun to take reps at first base this off-season. I would guess that this is a good idea, what with the Marcus Semien sign, but would you want to be an infielder across the basepaths throwing to a 5’6” first baseman?

No one has ever convinced me that this height, or lack of it, plays well in the outfield either.

I really don’t care how talented his projection is. There simply isn’t enough pop for a life as a designated hitter and his height only plays well as a middle infielder… and Semien and Francisco Lindor aren’t going anywhere.

I don’t believe you draft people as trade bait.

For these reasons, and nothing against Jett, I would not have drafted him.

Running From The OPS                       @OPS_BASEBALL

Eli Serrano III stands 6'5"/201 and was drafted in the 4th round of the 2024 draft by the Mets. He posted a .690 OPS in 88 games with 7 HR and 21 2B. While that might be underwhelming, the 22-year-old has tons of untapped raw power and generates easy bat speed with good QoC.

                      Thomas Nestico                 @TJStats

Eli Serrano III is my Mets prospect breakout pick for the 2026 season thanks to his all-around profile and solid results in his first pro season. Filling out his 6'5" could lead to significant power bump which would pair wonderfully with his sound approach and bat-to-

I really don’t know why so many people around me are excited about Serrano. He hit .234 in 2024 for St. Lucie, followed by a whopping .222 last season for Brooklyn. I’m not even sure he will turn out to be a good AAAA player for the organization. Sorry Eli. Ya gotta show me more this season before I sign on here.

Carson Benge

MLB.com

“When you have good players at the upper levels of the Minor Leagues,” Stearns said in November, “we have to find space for those players to play. Carson Benge is among them. He’s not the only one, but he’s among them. So as we build out our team, we have to ensure that, as we move forward, there is room for our young players to get to the Major Leagues when they deserve to get there -- and have a chance to really contribute to our Major League team.” – David Stearns

MLB.com

OF Carson Benge (NYM No. 2 prospect, No. 21 overall)

From the beginning of this offseason, the Mets made it clear they wanted to leave space for Benge to contribute. Coming off a standout season that saw him dominate Double-A Binghamton as he climbed multiple levels in the farm system, Benge will compete for a job on the Opening Day roster. He may not win one. But even if that happens, Benge should get every opportunity to contribute to the Major League team at some point. So long as he continues producing at the plate, the 2024 first-round Draft pick is likely to run with it. -- Anthony DiComo

Big fan, but I need to see more before I sign off on him as a starter in the majors.

Benge needs to pick up the hitting while he is in Syracuse. Has to hit consistently above .300 at that level.

I wouldn’t rush him and, I don’t care what Stearns says… he’s not ready and, at this stage, could easily never be ready to start in the majors.

Serrano has a put up or shut up year, or he falls into the JT Schwartz category of “Falling Short”.

He was playing in hitters’ hell Brooklyn. Home .189, away .255. Put him in Binghamton.

Benge may have worked his buttocks off this off season and raised his game a notch or two, and be ready.

Jett hasn’t wowed me yet. I want to go WOW!

David Stearns reminds fans right now of the Beatles’ song Nowhere Man, lyrics below, until he proves otherwise to them:

He's a real nowhere man, Sitting in his nowhere land
Making all his nowhere plans for nobody
Doesn't have a point of view, Knows not where he's going to
Isn't he a bit like you and me?

Nowhere man, please listen, You don't know what you're missing
Nowhere man, The world is at your command

He's as blind as he can be, Just sees what he wants to see
Nowhere man, can you see me at all?

Nowhere man, don't worry, Take your time, don't hurry
Leave it all, ‘Til somebody else lends you a hand

Doesn't have a point of view, Knows not where he's going to
Isn't he a bit like you and me?

Nowhere man, please listen, You don't know what you're missing
Nowhere man, The world is at your command

He's a real nowhere man, Sitting in his nowhere land
Making all his nowhere plans for nobody
Making all his nowhere plans for nobody
Making all his nowhere plans for nobody

these guys are typical of what the Mets currently have in their system... very talented question marks. But, ya know what? That's what all minor league prospects without major league experience are. We're just going to have to allow the process to continue.

Mack Ade said...

a little harsh song here... Stearns going nowhere for nobody... well, we know he, at least goes somewhere every time he goes to the bank to deposit his check (for you old guys...)

I know it ain't Stairway To Heaven right now, but what about Johnny Rivers' SECRET AGENT MAN?

Tom Brennan said...

This should be Jett’s WOW year.

BUT…

Here are two players’ minor league slash lines:

#1. .256/.388/.439

#2 .264/.379/.391

Pretty darned similar.

First guy is Jett. Second guy is Danny Muno.

If Stearns ran a restaurant that had depressed sales overall but actually had very good sales of pizza and hamburgers he’d get rid of the pizza and hamburgers from the menu explaining that due to the poor sales the restaurant had to try something new

Mack Ade said...

speaking of harsh...

Mets fans that feel this way are big fans of the ex-Mets that he wanted nothing to do with in the future. Understandable feeling, but meaningless in a plan of re-targeting your team in th2027 and beyond.

Yes, I will miss Pete

Nimmo and McNeil had no future here under any POBO or GM

And Diaz was just a pain in the arse.

I am NOT going to like the 2026 Mets but I think what Stearns is doing is finally doing what he was originally brought here to do... build his own winning team long into the next decade

Dan B said...

Same mack. Miss Pete. I think there was a way to move forward with him considering DH was open and right handed 40 hr bats dont grow on trees.

Ive come up with like 5 different armchair GM plans over the course of this off season as players have come off the board.

Currently i would see if tucker could be had on something between 5-7 years. Tucker has some (very) modest experience playing 1B. Go higher AAV and see if you can get this deal done. He or soto transition to 1B or DH once Polonco is gone in 2 years.

A huge lineup boost. You seeentislly replaced pete, nimmo and mcneil with tucker, simien and polonco. Mets come out ahead with overall better time horizon.

Also, if the mets sign tucker (who is worth giving up the draft comp for) i wouldn't mind signing framber on a 3-4 year deal while trading away one of senga or peterson as part of need for need (either get the best prospect return you can or package for a high leverage reliever ).

David Stearns is my guy. We will have a very good team in 2026 and a better one next year.

Mack Ade said...

I miss spring too

No 5-7 yr contracts please

Morning Ray

I too am a fan of Stearns and believe that the plan he is following will bring much success to the Mets but, unlike you, I expect this coming season will be played in rough waters 💧

The Waiting is the Hardest Part!

I’d rather go thru this offseason than experience another June or August 25 ever again. Made the ‘78 Mets look good (Doug Flynn & Nino Espinosa, et all)

If we dont go for tucker id say stick with what we have rotation wise and see who bounces back / develops further. Sign additional pen help and sign Suarez to DH and 1B duties with Polonco. Gives some real thump without an overcommitment, let you out Benge in a corner and keeps CF free for ewing, jett or whoever else to fight over. Team will have a very wide projected record range. Could be bad could be great depending on where the kids land but we should know what’s what and be ready for 2027 or have some fast risers and decide to buy during the deadline.

Selfishly, i’d love it if they could pull of a miracle season this year being the 40th anniversary of the 86 team. Also happens to be my 40th birthday this summer. Hope i didn't curse the mets! They haven’t won a world series since i was 3 month old!

Mack Ade said...

Important to remember

Tong will be ready by June

Sproat too

Ditto Christian Scott

Also Ryan Lambert

And Carson Benge

Dylan Ross ready now

You must not crowd the 26 up with 5-7 yr contracts

TexasGusCC said...

Holy smokes Mack! I completely agree with you! What today’s date?

RVH said...

The bulk of their “offseason” will be early mid-season this year. The timing is off normal cycle & it is unsettling but necessary.

TexasGusCC said...

Luis Robert fits like a glove. But, what the heck does Chicago want?

Mack Ade said...

Robert fits like, at best, a fingerless glove

Don't understand the love for this D first CFer. Got one of them already in Taylor

Paul Articulates said...

I agree with Mack - Robert is just another in a long line of defense only CFs. We have had enough of them.

Jjgmdpc said...

Tucker in right, Robert in center, Benge in left and Soto at first( until he shows that he has to DH). Not mortgaging the future for 1 year SP rentals. We should be able to get 2 front line pitchers out of Scott, McLean Sproat and Tong(maybe 3). Next year we get our ace in Skubal or Peralta. But unless we improve the lineup Skubal, Peralta et al aren’t coming.

Mack Ade said...

Whatever you're smoking, send me some

That Adam Smith said...

Benge’s topline stats weren’t good in AAA (small sample) but he did have an injury that cost him a week there, and his underlying metrics were exceptional. I don’t think Stearns is dreaming when he says that the kid has a chance to break camp. I feel like they’re very high on him and want to get him up and going through whatever adjustment he’ll have as soon as possible. I do think he’s a RF (great arm, maybe slightly below avg speed for a CF), but he’ll likely start in LF, depending on what other OF they bring in.

Mack Ade said...

IMO

Breaking camp depends on whether he can sign a quality outfielder for one year coupled with goal for 2026 season 🤔

TexasGusCC said...

It’s the upside… not a star, but could be a solid contributor. Don’t get me wrong, at best someone like RJ Gordon…
