5 4 4-12: Rotation Woes, Forbes on the Mets, Thirsty Thursday, Ted Williams... and Mid Season Callup

Rotation Woes:

At this point it is obvious that John Maine and Oliver Perez are not part of any future planning. The Mets like power-armed Brad Holt, but many other organizations are not as high on him. The Mets think Tobi Stoner could be a complementary piece at the back of a rotation, but they felt that way last year about Dillon Gee and he regressed significantly. Beyond that the Mets have arms they like, but they are far away. Kyle Allen, Jeurys Familia and left-hander Robert Carson are in the A-level Florida State League, but several organizations like Carson’s groundball penchant. - nypost

Forbes on the Mets:

The Mets' revenues were flat. That's amazing. So amazing that I'm not really buying it. Technically,Forbes says they were up $7 million, but considering that they opened a new stadium and saw pretty good attendance (relative to capacity), that seems incredibly light. Forbes has their gate receipts up $20 million, and the marginal revenue sharing rate is 31 percent, so something else must have been slightly down. Any guesses? Sponsorships? Local media? Certainly not suites (although that may be counted in gate receipts). None of these are all that likely, so I'm dying to know how they figured this. - baseballprospectus.

Thirsty Thursday:

Opening night, baseball aside, was an absolute CIRCUS! They call it Thirsty Thursday, I call it a frat party loosely centered around a ball game. By the second rain delay I'm guessing 80% of the crowd was incapable of walking the first baseline. This includes the two mouth-breathers who openly encouraged my wife to flash me in the middle of our conversation. - link

Ted Williams:

I received a review copy of Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu: John Updike on Ted Williams today. This is a collector’s item, put together by Updike just before his death, of his 1960 New Yorker article on the last game played by Ted Williams. It’s a brilliant essay, and Updike added footnotes for this version, as well as a short biography of the Splendid Splinter as an afterword. The jacket is stunning, with the title embossed over a color photo of Ted. The hard cover is a photo of Ted hitting a home run from the mid 1940s, his eye still on the ball as he finishes the swing and watches the horse hide leave the stadium. -  link

Mid Season Callup:

If he can stay healthy Fernando Martinez may see himself in the outfield, though that will mean that Gary Mathews or Jeff Francouer has disappointed. Once the Mets get tired of the mediocre production of their catching corp Josh Thole will be given an opportunity to see what he can do. If Ike Davis is slugging homeruns in AAA he will see a callup to the Mets for first base if Mike Jacobs is not doing the job. - mwob
