LAST GAME: Three Binghamton pitchers combined to hold Erie
to just three hits in the B-Mets 2-0 shutout win over the Sea-
Wolves. Starter Eric Niesen went 4.2 innings and allowed just
two hits and struck out five, however, he walked five to nab a
no-decision. Edgar Ramirez followed with three innings of onehit
work to pick up the win. At one point, Ramirez retired nine
straight Erie hitters. Righty John Lujan notched his first save of
the season with 1.1 innings of perfect work with a strikeout.
Binghamton plated its first run off SeaWolves starter Jon
Kibler in the fifth inning when Kirk Nieuwenhuis drove home
Jose Coronado, who had doubled ahead of him, making it 1-0.
Coronado reached on an error to start the seventh inning and
eventually scored when Lucas Duda roped a ground-rule double
that hopped over the right-centerfield wall. Kibler took the
loss for Erie, despite allowing just one run over six innings.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Dylan Owen will make a
second turn through the rotation filling in for injured starter
Brad Holt, who remains on the shelf with a right wrist injury.
He was unhittable in his last start April 9 versus Akron when
he tossed five, no-hit innings with three walks and six strikeouts
to pick up the win. Owen made 23 starts for Binghamton
last season, chewing up a team-best 123 innings with a 4-10
record and 5.93 ERA. He was the Mets 20th round selection
in the 2007 draft out of Francis Marion University in Florence,
SC.
RHP L.J. Gagnier will make his second start of the season for
Erie tonight in the series finale. The righty allowed five hits in
five, shutout innings April 9 at Trenton, but got a no-decision
in the SeaWolves 3-1 loss. Last season, Gagnier was the Tigers
Pitcher of the Year with Lakeland (High-A) where he went
9-10 with a 3.83 ERA in 23 appearances, 22 starts, over 134
innings. He was taken in the 10th round of the 2006 draft by
the Tigers out of Cal State Fullerton.
EVANS LEAVES TWICE: B-Mets first baseman hit a pair of
homers in Monday night’s 7-4 victory over Erie, a two-run shot
in the first and a solo job in the seventh. It was the first time
he had hit two long balls in a game since April 16, 2009 when
he hit two out against Scranton/Wilkes Barre at Coca Field for
the Buffalo Bisons (AAA).
BULLPEN BULLISH: After surrendering 14 earned runs in 19
innings (6.63 ERA) over the first four games of the season, the
bullpen has not allowed a run in its last 8.2 innings. During
that span, the men of the pen have allowed just two hits,
struck out nine and walked only two hitters. For the year, the
relievers have struck out 28 men over the course of 27.1
innings.
