LAST GAME: Nick Evans supplied a game-winning RBI single in
the bottom of the 13th inning last night to lead the B-Mets to
a 4-3 win and a three-game sweep of the winless Erie Sea-
Wolves. Binghamton trailed Erie almost the entire game before
tying it in the ninth inning against closer Brooks Brown.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis laced a single into left with two outs in the
ninth to plate Luis Hernandez, who had stolen second base
after singling. In extra-innings, Josh Stinson threw four, shutout
innings without allowing a hit to pick up the win in relief.
Starter Dylan Owen threw well for the second straight time,
going six innings and allowing three runs, one earned, on four
hits. Designated hitter Marshall Hubbard led the B-Mets 13-hit
attack with a 3-4 night including a pair of doubles.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:
RHP Scott Shaw will make his
second Double-A start tonight for the B-Mets. Shaw allowed
eight runs, seven earned, over 2.1 innings last Saturday
against Akron in a no-decision. He led St. Lucie (High-A) last
season in numerous categories, including starts (26), innings
(149.2), wins (8) and strikeouts (118). The righty was drafted
by the Mets in the 13th round of the June 2008 draft out of
the University of Illinois.
RHP Zach Stewart will make his second start of the season for
the Fisher Cats tonight. He threw five innings and allowed one
run on four hits at New Britain Saturday night to pick up the
win. The former third round pick of the Reds in 2008 out of
Texas Tech was traded to Toronto along with Edwin Encarnacion
and Josh Roenicke for Scott Rolen last season.
EVANS LEAVES TWICE: B-Mets first baseman hit a pair of
homers in Monday night’s 7-4 victory over Erie, a two-run shot
in the first and a solo job in the seventh. It was the first time
he had hit two long balls in a game since April 16, 2009 when
he hit two out against Scranton/Wilkes Barre at Coca Field for
the Buffalo Bisons (AAA).
BULLPEN BULLISH: After surrendering 14 earned runs in 19
innings (6.63 ERA) over the first four games of the season, the
bullpen has not allowed a run in its last 15.2 innings. During
that span, the men of the pen have allowed just three hits,
struck out 17 and walked only three hitters. For the year, the
relievers have struck out 36 men over the course of 34.1
innings.
BRING OUT THE BROOMS: Last night’s win marked the B-Mets
first three-game series sweep since June 6-8, 2008 when
Binghamton swept the New Britain Rock Cats at NYSEG Stadium.
At no point during the 2009 season did the B-Mets win
three consecutive games.
