LAST GAME: The B-Mets busted out in a big way Tuesday night
with a 15-3 victory over Portland to end a three-game skid.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis led the way at the plate with a five-hit day,
including a homer and two doubles. The B-Mets centerfielder
also drove in four runs and scored four times. Scott Shaw was
the beneficiary of the run-scoring as he picked up his second
straight win after tossing five innings. He allowed three earned
runs on four hits and walked four. Lucas Duda also had a big
day with a 3-4 game, highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles.
Including Nieuwenhuis’ shot, Binghamton roped three homers.
Nick Evans put the team on top 2-0 in the first with a tworun
jack off Sea Dogs’ starter Ryne Miller, who took the loss
after allowing six runs in three innings. The other homer came
from an unlikely source. Jose Coronado launched his second
homer of the season, a grand slam in the third inning off
Miller, the first of his professional career.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mike Antonini gets the
call in the rubber match of the three-game set with Portland.
In his last start at New Hampshire April 16, the lefty allowed
two runs in five innings to earn his first win of the year. He is 1
-1 with a 7.27 ERA in 8.2 innings thus far in 2010. The southpaw
went 7-5 with a 5.32 ERA over 25 appearances, 20
starts, spanning 115 innings last year with Binghamton. He
was the Mets 18th round choice in the June 2007 draft out of
Georgia College & State University.
RHP Kyle Weiland will make his third start of the young season
this afternoon. He worked five innings versus Trenton
April 15 and allowed a pair of runs on four hits with six strikeouts
in the no-decision. Weiland is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 10
innings. Last season, he went 7-9 with a 3.46 ERA in 26 starts
spanning 132.2 innings. The righty was a non-roster invitee to
Major League Spring Training this season and is in his third
season in the Boston farm system after being drafted in the
third round out of Notre Dame in 2008.
NIEUWENHUIS’ NIGHT: B-Mets centerfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis
cracked five hits in Tuesday’s 15-3 win over Portland. The 5-6
showing included two doubles, a homer, four runs scored and
four RBI. The last B-Mets slugger with five hits in a single
game was Josh Thole, who performed the feat May 14, 2009
against Trenton at NYSEG Stadium.
MALDONADO DEBUTS: Outfielder Brahiam Maldonado made
his Double-A debut last night and managed a 2-4 showing
with a double, a stolen base and a run scored. Maldonado
was called up from St. Lucie (High-A) prior to the game, where
he was hitting .324 (12-37) with three doubles, two homers
and five RBI.
