The first game in the Thruway Cup Series wasn’t much of a game. The Syracuse Chiefs erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and beat the Buffalo Bisons, 9-1. The loss ended Buffalo’s three-game winning streak. The game was played before an announced crowd of 2,918 at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Thruway Cup is a season-long series between Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, the three cities along Interstate 90. Buffalo’s only run came on leadoff homer by Ike Davis in the second inning over the 408-foot sign. It was his second home run of the season. Davis also singled in the game and has now reached base at least twice in each of the team’s first five games. - buffalonews
Nick Evans wants to make it clear that last year is behind him, and his performance Monday night served as confirmation. Evans hit a pair of home runs -- one to left field and one to right -- to lead the Binghamton Mets to a series-opening 7-4 victory over the Erie SeaWolves at NYSEG Stadium. Evans now has multiple hits in three of his five games this season and is batting .400, a far cry from the .093 average he sported in his first 75 at-bats with Triple-A Buffalo last season. - pressconnects
-here’s the problem with this… Evans is two years past AA ball and, naturally, if you send a 24-year old back to where he played as a 22-year old, he’s going to hit better than he did in the majors. Evans is a great guy and would be better suited in a small market organization where he can have a future in the majors. Everyone can’t make it and the math simply isn’t on his side here.
The Gnats' strongest threat to score came in the eighth when they loaded the bases, only to come up empty handed. The Gnats have now gone 17 consecutive innings without scoring after getting one run in the first inning of Sunday's 6-1 loss to West Virginia. The Green Jackets got the only run they needed when Chris Dominguez homered off loser Tyler Whitenton (0-1) in the second. Augusta made it 2-0 in the next inning when Nick Liles tripled leading off and scored on Ryan Cavan's one out single.
Juan Lagares has now hit safely in all five of the Gnats' games after singling in the second inning. Shortstop Wilmer Flores, meanwhile, had his four game streak snapped as he went hitless in four trips, including a bases loaded ground out in the eighth that ended the inning.
In his first appearance of the season, Gnats reliever Darin Gorski showed why he has a reputation as a strikeout pitcher. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound left-hander struck out seven in four innings in a dominating performance. - savannahnow.
