LAST GAME: Despite grabbing an early 1-0 lead, the B-Mets
lost their third straight game and the first of the three-game
set with Portland 7-3. Starter Dylan Owen struggled with his
command and walked six men over five innings, while allowed
five runs on five hits to take the loss. Zach Lutz led the Binghamton
offense with a 3-4 showing including a double and an
RBI. Felix Doubront picked up the win, his second, for the Sea
Dogs with five innings of three-run work. Lars Anderson led
the charge for Portland at the plate with a 2-4 game including
an RBI single in the first and a solo homer in the third, both off
Owen. Ryan Kalish also left the yard for his second homer of
the year in the sixth off reliever Edgar Ramirez.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:
RHP Scott Shaw will make the
third start of his Double-A career tonight. He notched his first
win in his last start at New Hampshire last Thursday with five
innings of work. Shaw allowed three runs on six hits and
struck out five without issuing a walk. He is 1-0 with a 12.27
ERA in 7.1 innings in 2010. He led St. Lucie (High-A) last season
in numerous categories, including starts (26), innings
(149.2), wins (8) and strikeouts (118). The righty was drafted
by the Mets in the 13th round of the June 2008 draft out of
the University of Illinois.
RHP Ryne Miller will start for the Sea Dogs in the middle game
of the series. His last outing came April 14 at New Britain
when he tossed five innings of shutout baseball and allowed
just three hits. He is 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA in 10 innings in
2010. Throughout his career in the Red Sox organization,
Miller has been a reliever, until the end of 2009 when he
made three starts with Portland. He made 41 appearances in
between Salem (High-A) and Portland and carried a 2.76 ERA
in 94.2 innings. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent
July 21, 2007 by Boston.
WALK THIS WAY: The B-Mets pitching staff has struggled with
its command as a unit this season. In 107 innings thus far in
2010, Binghamton’s hurlers have walked 57 men or about
4.8 per game, easily the most in the Eastern League. Entering
play today, the B-Mets team ERA sits at 5.55, almost a run
worst then the second to last place team Akron (4.67).
EASTERN LEAGUE HITTER OF THE WEEK: B-Mets first baseman
Nick Evans was named as the Eastern League’s Hitter of
the Week for the first week of the season today. On the year,
he is fourth in the league with a .372 (16-43) average and
leads the league in hits (16), runs scored (11) and total bases
(29). Evans has missed the last two games due to a stomach
flu. Without the veteran first baseman, the team has scored
just four runs in its last 21 innings
