6/21/10

2011 DRAFT: - Anthony Rendon, Mark Pope, Brett Mooneyham, and Ricky Oropesa.

Anthony Rendon:

6-19 from: - link  - Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon have been named as one of the finalists for the 2010 Dick Howser Trophy. Rendon is just the second player in Conference USA history to be named Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. He picked up that honor again this year while leading the Owls to the regular season league championship and the school’s 16th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. The two-time first team All-C-USA selection was named to the C-USA Championship All-Tournament team and was named the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Austin Regional. He batted .402 in conference play and finished the season hitting .394 overall. Rendon led Conference USA in home runs with 26 and had more homers than strikeouts (22) all season long. Rendon ranks among the nation’s leaders in runs scored (83) and walks (65) while maintaining a .530 on-base percentage. He had 12 doubles and 85 RBI, while posting an .801 slugging percentage.

Mark Pope:

6-18 from: - link  - the outing of the week so far easily goes to Georgia Tech's Mark Pope, a 2011 name that could sneak into the back end of the first round next June. Pitching for Falmouth on the Cape, he threw 7 shutout innings on Tuesday, as well, scattering just a pair of singles and a single walk, striking out 11 in the process. Pope kicked Brandon Cumpton out of a weekend rotation spot late in the year and pitched very, very well, and I think he's the front-runner for Tech's Friday job next spring over Jed Bradley. He has a solid-average 90-92 mph fastball most of the time, but he has an above-average to plus slider and a quality changeup, so it looks like he's starting to break out a bit. If these outings continue, he could be next year's Chris Sale, building himself into a top prospect on the back of a great summer on the Cape. He's not on the Team USA trials roster, so he'll be on the Cape all summer unless something happens.

6-21-10 from: - http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/06/21/cape-cod-baseball-league-players-of-the-week-2  - The first pitcher to secure the Coca Cola Pitcher of the Week award is Falmouth’s Mark Pope (Georgia Tech). Pope was lights out in his first appearance, his only to date. In a 1-0 victory over Cotuit, the righty fanned 11 Kettleers over seven shutout innings, surrendering only two hits. The 11 strikeouts recorded by Pope have been matched by only three other pitchers over the first week of games.A bright future lies ahead for the Georgia Tech sophomore. As a freshman, Pope was the Yellow Jackets’ closer, recording 18 scoreless innings in 25 appearances, good for a 5-1 record and eight saves for the season. In 2010 as a starter, the versatile Pope went 8-1, ending the season with both a complete game and a save. He was selected in the 18th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, but elected to attend Georgia Tech instead.

Brett Mooneyham:

6-18 from: - link  -Just for an update on a couple bigger names on the Cape right now, Stanford's Brett Mooneyham went on Tuesday and threw 5 decent innings, allowing a run on 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 7. The issue isn't the stuff with Mooneyham, it's the control, so I'd like to see him chip away at the walks as the summer goes along. He has first round stuff, but third round control, so he's in trouble if he doesn't take a few strides forward. He's tuning up for the Team USA trials now.

Ricky Oropesa:

6-18 from: - link  - Arguably the best bat on the Cape right now is fellow Pac 10 player Ricky Oropesa from USC. He's gone 4-for-14 so far, hitting a double and homer in the process, but he's not controlling the strike zone enough right now, though 3 games is way too small of a sample to draw conclusions. He's an interesting bat to follow when you include his pop, so be on the lookout.

6-21-10 from: - http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/06/21/cape-cod-baseball-league-players-of-the-week-2  - Chatham first baseman Rick Oropesa (USC) has been named 2010’s first Coca Cola Player of the Week. Over his first week of Cape League games, Oropesa batted a strong .304, but it was his power numbers earned him this week’s honor. The Trojan’s two home runs leave him tied for the most over the past week, while his seven runs batted in stand alone atop the leader board. A .609 slugging percentage, good for fourth in the league, coupled with a .429 on-base percentage make Oropesa a force at the plate. The sophomore USC product’s success should not be a shock. This past season for the Trojans, Oropesa led the team in all three triple crown categories: batting average (.353), home runs (20) and runs batted in (67). He was named All-America Second Team and received All Pac-10 honors last year after being named Freshman All-America the season before. Oropesa was drafted in the 24th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft by the Boston Red Sox upon graduation from high school, before deciding to attend USC.
