6/20/10
Staten Island 2, Brooklyn 1
The Brooklyn Cyclones took their first loss of the year on Sunday, as the Staten Island Yankees defeated the Mets’ New York-Penn League affiliate, 2-1.
Angel Cuan, who is coming off a less-than-stellar 2009 in Kingsport, got off on the right foot in his first start in Brooklyn. The lefty kept Brooklyn in the game, going six strong innings, giving up just one run and five hits.
But Staten Island starter Michael O’Brien gave the Yankees a great effort himself. The 20-year-old righty lasted seven innings, giving up just two hits and a walk, while striking out four, and surrendering an unearned run.
The Yankees struck first with two extra base hits in the third inning. Third baseman Garrison Lassiter led off with a triple and leftfielder Isaiah Brown drove him in with a double, giving Staten Island a 1-0 lead.
The Cyclones managed to tie the game in the sixth inning on a throwing error by Yankee first baseman Carlos Urena.
But in the seventh, Luis Parache put the Yankees back in the lead with a RBI double off of Cyclone reliever A.J. Pinera, the team’s 18th-round selection in this year’s draft. Parache’s RBI would end up being the difference in the end, as relievers Preston Claiborne and Chase Whitley combined to close the door in the final two innings for the Yankees.
Offensively, Brooklyn struggled all day. Outfielder R.J. Harris and shortstop Luis Nieves were the only Cyclones to get a hit.
The Cyclones welcome the Aberdeen IronBirds to Coney Island on Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
