Vaughn, Cyclones knock off Aberdeen, 5-2; take first place
Mets’ fans may have seen a glimpse of the team’s future tonight, as Cory Vaughn was the offensive star for the Brooklyn Cyclones in a 5-2 victory over the Aberdeen IronBirds in a game that was televised on SNY.
The son of Greg Vaughn, who joined the Cyclones in his first professional season after his junior campaign at San Diego State, led the Coney Island team to victory with two big hits, a home run and a triple, along with two RBIs and three runs scored.
It did not take long for Vaughn to strike, as he stroked an opposite-field two-run home run in the first inning, after a Darrell Ceciliani triple, giving Brooklyn a 2-0 lead early on.
The IronBirds responded in the second with a two-run Austin Goolsby single that tied the game. The Aberdeen catcher’s two RBIs were the only two given up all night by Brooklyn starter Wesley Wrenn, who pitched six innings, allowing six hits and striking out six.
Vaughn was involved in another rally that helped Brooklyn take the lead in the fourth. Will Cherry drove him in after the right fielder managed a leadoff walk. Cherry later scored on a passed ball, giving the Cyclones a two-run advantage.
In the sixth inning, Vaughn led off the inning with a triple, putting himself in position to score on a Cherry suicide squeeze two batters later, extending the Cyclone lead to 5-2.
Out of the bullpen, Ryan Fraser pitched a scoreless seventh and Johan Figuereo shut down Aberdeen in the final two innings, securing the win for Wrenn.
The Cyclones are now 3-1 and in first place in the New York-Penn League. Brooklyn faces off with Aberdeen again tomorrow night at MCU Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
