The Binghamton Mets swept the Erie SeaWolves in a doubleheader Fridaynight at NYSEG Stadium, earning a 2-0 win in the opener before collecting a 5-4victory on Jefry Marte’s walk-off single in the nightcap. It was the B-Metsfirst doubleheader sweep since July 9, 2011.
TheB-Mets drew first blood in the opener. Juan Lagares led off the first with asingle to right against Patrick Cooper. A walk to Reese Havens set the tablefor Wilmer Flores who delivered with a two-run triple to the right fieldcorner.
Theearly offense was all Binghamton would muster against Cooper. The rightybounced back and retired the final 18 B-Mets he faced to close his night.
Binghamtonstarting pitcher Cory Mazzoni stole the show in the opener. With terrificdefense behind him, Mazzoni fired seven shutout innings and allowed just onerunner to reach third. He did not walk a batter and struck out one in his firstcareer win at NYSEG Stadium.
Mazzoni(3-2) collected his second straight win and extended his scoreless inningsstreak to fourteen. Cooper (2-3) suffered the hard-luck loss.
Binghamtonsnapped out of their hitting mini-funk to open up the nightcap. Lagares singledagainst spot-starter David Kopp to start the first inning, stole second andscored on a single by Allan Dykstra later in the inning.
TheB-Mets added to their lead in the third inning. After a bunt single by Lagares,Mike Fisher, in his first game of the year with the B-Mets, blasted a two-runhomer to right field. It was his first round-tripper since he went deep for theBuffalo Bisons (AAA) in June 2011. Jefry Marte capped the scoring for Binghamtonwith a solo homer in the fourth, his second in as many days.
MarkCohoon followed in Mazzoni’s footsteps and put up a solid outing. The leftyallowed one unearned run over six innings, struck out a season-high six SeaWolves,and left with a chance to win.
TheB-Mets took a 4-1 lead in to the seventh and looked to Robert Carson to lockdown the save. However, the southpaw could not preserve the lead. Erie scoredthree runs on four hits, capped by a game-tying two run double by NiumanRomero.
Afterthe B-Mets failed to score against Robbie Weinhardt and Michael Morrison in theseventh, Ryan Fraser took over in the eighth and tossed a perfect frame.
Floresstarted the bottom of the eighth with a walk against Morrison. Following a sacbunt by Eric Campbell, Allan Dykstra was intentionally walked. After workingthe count full, Jefry Marte lined a single to right centerfield, bringing homeFlores with the game-winning run. It was Marte’s second walk-off hit of theseason.
Fraser(2-1) earned the win while Morrison (2-3) suffered the loss. Carson was saddledwith his third blown save of the season.
