After a scoreless first inning, Cole Frenzel opened the scoring in the top of the second with a lead off home run for the Cyclones. The lefthanded hitting Frenzel, who collected only four hits in 26 at-bats against southpaw pitching during his time with the Cyclones last season, is batting .538 (7-13) against lefties this season including the solo blast against Renegades starter Matt Spann (0-1)
An inning later the lead would swell to 3-0 thanks to a pair of errors from Hudson Valley third baseman Felix Gonzalez. To start the threat, Dimas Ponce reached on the first error of the inning, before a Phillip Evans walk and a plunking of Frenzel loaded the bases. Stefan Sabol took advantage of the scoring chance by hitting a hard grounder that was misplayed by the Renegades third baseman, allowing a pair of runs to score and push the Cyclones advantage to 3-0.
That is all the offense the Cyclones could muster, as the team did not collect a base hit after the second inning, but with Luis Mateo pitching that would be more than enough. The 22-year-old righthander scattered only three hits while striking out six in the game. Through 17.2 innings this season, Mateo has allowed just one run on seven hits while walking two and striking out 22.
Lefthadner David Wynn pitched 2.0 perfect innings of relief, striking out three, before turning it over to Tyler Vanderheiden in the ninth. The Renegades mounted a rally against the sidearming righthander, loading the bases with nobody out, but Vanderheiden worked his way out of the jam to close out the Cyclones third shutout victory of the season, and collect his league leading fourth save of the year.
