Brian Joura Mets360.com: If before the game started, you were told that Jacob deGrom got pulled after two innings and that Michael Wacha was coming in with the game already at a 3-0 deficit, well you wouldn’t have given the Mets’ a snowball’s chance of winning. The Phillies actually had an 85.4 Win Expectancy during the second inning. But the Mets’ relievers were outstanding and J.D. Davis cracked three extra-base hits to lead the Mets to a highly-improbable comeback, as they emerged with a 5-4 win to even the series.


SNY.TV: Zack Wheeler looked very comfortable against his former team, allowing just one run through the first five innings. But the Mets got to him in the sixth, as Brandon Nimmo doubled and Davis crushed an opposite-field home run to right, cutting the lead to 4-3.




Mike Puma NY Post: Andres Gimenez knocked in the go-ahead run with a single in the ninth after Robinson Cano had singled leading off the inning and pinch-runner Amed Rosario was balked to second by Hector Neris.



Metstradamus: “So here comes Edwin Diaz against the top of the Phillies order…I begged of Edwin: Just give us this one…Diaz struck out Andrew McCutchen and Bryce Harper for the first two outs before giving up a single to Alec Bohm to bring up Didi Gregorius, but more importantly, to put Jean Segura on deck…But thankfully Diaz, without the best of control, struck out Gregorius to end it and give the Mets a 5-4 win.”


SNY.TV: Despite a short Jacob deGrom outing, Mets' unlikely heroes came up clutch in win over Phillies. Michael Wacha gave the Mets four innings, and Andres Gimenez delivered winning hit.

Mets right-fielder Rusty Staub, in a 5-2 loss to Chicago at Shea Stadium, homers off Ray Burris in the fourth frame for his 98th RBI of the season, establishing a new team record. 'Le Grand Orange' surpasses the franchise mark set by Donn Clendenon in 1970.

1977

Yankees DH Dave Kingman, with a third-inning round-tripper off Jim Crawford at Tiger Stadium, becomes the first player to homer for four different teams in one season. The much-traveled veteran will hit a total of 26 home runs this year playing for the Mets (9), Padres (11), Angels (2), and the Bronx Bombers (4).

 

1982

In the bottom of the seventh at Shea Stadium, Dave Kingman knots the score at 2-2 against the Redbirds when he hits the final homer of his league-leading season total of 37. The 33 year-old Mets slugger will finish the season hitting just .204, the lowest batting average ever for a player who wins a home run crown.

 

1984

Mets rookie Dwight Gooden ties a major league record shared by Luis Tiant (1968 Indians) and Nolan Ryan (1974 Angels) with a total of 32 strikeouts in two consecutive games. The 19 year-old Dr. K, who strikes out 16 Phillies in the team's 2-1 loss at Veterans Stadium, also fanned sixteen Buc batters in his last start, a 2-0 complete-game victory at Shea Stadium.

 

2016

Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson hits two extra-inning home runs in the same game, giving the team a 3-2 victory over the Twins at Citi Field. The Grandy Man ties the game leading off in the 11th inning and then hits a two-out solo homer, the club's 201st home run to set a franchise mark, in the following frame to end the game.

1986 - The Mets clinch the National League East title with a 4 - 2 win over the Cubs at Shea Stadium as Dwight Gooden tosses a six-hitter. The Mets will win 108 games this season, most in the National League since the 1975 Reds.

Those 8 Ks in the last 3 innings was something. Hopefully Lugo can give the Mets some length tonight.

John, hope so. So, I also go back to a point...Jake went that extra inning in his last start, a blow out win, but he was feeling something in his hammy then? Why did he not come out after 5, rather than 6?

I hope Pete Alonso looks at that sweet Bartolo Colon swing - it might help him fix his own useless swing.

Blue Jays in last 5 games lost 3 while surrendering 51 runs!

And beat the Mets in the other 2 games!

That is a great point Tom. I can only imagine that Jake insisted on pitching but that is where a manager needs to say "enough".

I don't want to jinx him, but I've been very impressed with Erasmo Ramirez in his small sample.

A SP by trade, he's done a very nice job in the pen. And 3+ IP has not been a problem for him.

I could see piggybacking him and Lugo if needed, or even giving him a start if Jake has to miss a turn.

Wacha last might was by far the best of him we've seen so far. He may be saving his career and be worth another year here if he can follow this with another.

Meanwhile, I want to put in a word of praise for the "unsungest" Met this year. Senor Diaz has been close to perfect this season after a few bumps in July, leading MLB in K/9 and lowering his ERA under 2!

Yet people seem to be stuck on 2019. If his '19 were for another team, and this his 1st year here, he might be hailed as a "great find". And the "throw-in" in the deal has been playing a good 2B/DH role while hitting well over .300, also well under the radar.

Bill, I’m not stuck on 2019 regarding Diaz, but I’m not upset at him but rather still can’t forgive the stupidity of the trade. However, what I think about regarding a Diaz this year is a homerun with two outs on a 3-2 pitch to Osuna in the ninth and then they lost it in extras, and the homerun to Hicks with two outs on a 3-2 pitch and they lost that game in extras. He opens up early and batters have no problem tracking the pitch.

Great points Texas Gus. He has been better this year but until we can see that those brain locks are gone, it is hard to trust him.

In 21 appearances, 21 IP, he has the best K/9 anywhere, an ERA of 1.71. He's given up 5 ER all season, but 2 HRs early in the season is all you guys remember?

But you're not stuck on 2019. SMH.
