Michael Kirian

Louisville LHP

Ht: 6-6 | Wt: 235 | B-T: R-L

Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted

Age At Draft: 22.5

A big lefthander with a 6-foot-6, 235-pound frame, Kirian got hit around a bit as a freshman for Louisville in 2018 but settled in as a reliable reliever in 2019 and 2020. After posting a 12.71 ERA in just 11.1 innings as a freshman with almost as many walks (14) as strikeouts (16), Kirian managed a 2.81 ERA through 32 innings in 2019 and didn’t allow an earned run through 6.1 innings in the shortened 2020 season. Kirian has upped his velocity from 86-89 mph to the 90-93 mph range and he can touch 95 mph at his best. He pairs that fastball with a curveball that he has shown solid feel to land consistently and has also worked on a cutter and changeup. Kirian could show both of those secondaries more frequently during the 2021 season where he could get a chance in a starter role, with both Reid Detmers and Bobby Miller leaving the program for pro ball in the 2020 draft.

Relief Pitcher - Michael Kirian, Louisville

Kirian has been one of the most reliable stoppers in the sport over the last two years, having an ERA just north of 1.00 in that span while racking up 10 combined saves during the 2019 and 2020 campaigns. He’s a 6-foot-6 left-hander who pounds the strike zone and has a low- to mid 90s fastball that he uses to challenge hitters throughout the zone. He’ll likely have the opportunity to earn a starting role this spring, but even if he doesn’t the Cardinals have a reliable, potential multi-inning option out of the back end. If his last two seasons are any indication you can expect a microscopic ERA along with true run prevention ability.

The Northwest Ohio product verballed to Louisville during his sophomore season. And, in between now and then, he has floated below the radar after suffering an ACL injury. But, that is not the case any longer. The 6-foot-6, 240-pounder looks the part of a big leaguer and his stuff isn’t far behind. He showed command of 90-93 mph fastball complemented by a sharp 76-77 mph breaking ball and an 82-83 mph changeup. Mechanically, he throws from a high ¾ arm slot with obvious quickness to his arm. There isn’t much effort to his delivery and he wasn’t forcing the velocity on this occasion. And, his velocity held at 90 mph out of the stretch. With a strong spring, he could position himself for an early round draft selection in June.
