Tom Brennan - Sometimes, the Fierce Heart Trumps All

Takes a licking', keeps on tickin'

Kevin Pillar and his iron will hit a huge 3 run homer Monday night.  The Mets had just grabbed a one run lead in the 11th, but with just-called-up Anthony Banda due to pitch the 11th, more than a one run lead was needed.

The man in the face mask not too long ago, who made the bravest, fastest return from a severe injury that I've ever seen in baseball, had just tried to catch a fly in the corner, heading face-first and full tilt towards the side wall.

Just missed the catch, but who else who had a shattered nose surgically reassembled not that long ago would have been that aggressive?  Who would have blamed a guy for shying away from the fence.  No one, that's who.  A hockey-tough player in a baseball uniform.

He didn't snare that ball, but what effort.

Always, Pillar gives EFFORT and DETERMINATION.

Then, Mets leading 11-10 in the 11th, 2 men on, Pillar stepped to the plate a struggling hitter, but my guess is all he could see was Mano a Mano, no fear, no "what if I fail?", no thoughts of his recent hitting struggles, just intent on doing damage.

Expecting to do damage.

And damage he did, hitting a majestic 3 run shot into the dark night.

I am sure the ball had written on it, "ya gotta believe," and on the flip side "LFGM".

Pillar's shot was the cushion they needed - and clearly it was then "party is on" time, as Conforto, who has been struggling, swatted a dead center blast to put the icing on the 15 run cake.

Toughness rubs off.

Pillar's career OBP is slightly under .300, and he is hitting slightly under .220 this year, but his value to this team, his extraordinary toughness and resolve and encouragement, is worth so much more than his stats.

When Pillar hit his 3 run shot, was I surprised?  Not at all.

Were you?

After all:

He's Kevin Pillar.

A guy who has put together a solid MLB career, despite being drafted in the 32nd round.  No limits, no boundaries.

Stay The Course

On the much ballyhooed (and much annoying) notion of acquiring Cubbies utility man Kris Bryant. Kris just recently injured his hamstring playing left field people. Looked like he was shot in the leg. He's out injured, maybe on crutches. The 2021 NY Mets team has been like a MASH unit already, why add to it? Look at Carrasco for a clue here on hamstrings already, because each hammy injury is different and dependent upon each player's ability to heal. There is no accurate one size fits all timetable.

Bryant was supposed to be a third baseman? But gets hurt in left field running like Methuselah after a routine fly ball.

Please lose this idea. It's kind of stupid overall. See NY Knicks last ten year history on player acquisitions, aside from the Julius Randle move.

Summary: Another 1 year/ $19.0 million bad move for something not that great to begin with. Kris Bryant will be 30 his next birthday.

Kris has soon to be utility journeyman written all over him now. He'll be Curtis Granderson bouncing around MLB a few.

Look, the Mets basically have the same nucleus of batters that they had last season when it was really impressive here offensively (.272 BA/86 HR). Yes, it was a shortened season because of the purported Covid 19 virus. But it was the second highest team batting average in the history of these NY Mets as well, with only the 1999 season .279 BA being better). This wasn't "The Wizard of Oz" type magic last year people. No flying monkeys or dunking munchkins.

Now, the 2021 Mets offense is finally whole and healthy. It's starting to pop some muscle and get on base again. It's getting exciting. Just allow this to peak the rest of the way, for these players are all very good and have done it before.

It's actually the pitching here anyway.

Carrasco isn't ready yet and will need more time to regain himself. Thor is still in New Asgard resting. And we need some aflac here baby!

Who you ask?

RSP Kyle Benjamin Gibson - Solid stats, 6'6" like Thor, career stats in 2021. Just $9.0 million per season with another year left after 2021. Cannot lose here people.

After him, maybe Max Scherzer, although insiders saying Boston or Yanks get.

(Yanks could use both Scherzer and Gibson actually, if they want to actually contend in 2021 with TBay and BeanTown.)

I gotta' go now. I am pitching tonight for Syracuse in my elephant slippers, with Cosmo in the pen warming up.

Agree. Fix the pitching. Think big. Get the right guy.
