Born on this date:
- Casey Stengel (1890)
- Ellis Valentine (1954)
- Clint Hurdle (1957)
- Todd Haney (1965)
- Bill Robinson (2007)
New York Mets released Jerry May on July 30, 1973.
1966 | In the fifth season of the franchise's existence, the Mets experience their first winning month when they beat Chicago at Shea Stadium, 6-3. With another victory tomorrow, the Amazins will finish July with an 18-14 record. |
1969 | Mets manager Gil Hodges, with his team trailing 8-0 in the third inning of the nightcap against the Astros, walks past Nolan Ryan on the mound and continues into the Shea Stadium outfield, where he asks Cleon Jones to leave the game after a brief conversation with the left fielder. At the time, reports indicate the star player suffered a leg injury fielding Johnny Edwards' double, but many believe it was the skipper publicly demonstrating that he would not tolerate lack of hustle on his team. |
1969 | During an 11-run top of the ninth inning at Shea Stadium, Astros Denis Menke and Jim Wynn both hit grand slams. Jimmy Wynn and Norm Miller score on each bases-loaded home run when Houston cruises to a 16-3 victory over the Mets. |
2001 | The Twins get Mets starter Rick Reed for outfielder and leadoff batter Matt Lawton. The 36 year-old right-hander, a member of the National League All-Star team this season, had compiled an 8-6 record with a 3.86 ERA with New York prior to the deal. |
2014 | Felix Hernandez becomes the first pitcher in major league history to make 14 consecutive starts of at least seven innings pitched with giving up two runs or less. The Mariners right-hander, known as 'King Felix,' breaks the record previously held by Tom Seaver, who established the mark in 1971 while pitching for the Mets. |
2016 | "With all due respect to Tom Hanks, there is crying in baseball." - MIKE PIZZA, responding to his emotional state about being inducted into the Hall of Fame and having his number retired by the Mets. Mike Piazza, considered by many the greatest-hitting catcher in baseball history, has his number retired by the Mets, a team he played with for eight seasons, batting .296 and slugging 220 home runs. The 2016 Hall of Fame inductee is the second person, along with right-hander Tom Seaver (41) honored for what he accomplished as a player for the team and he joins managers Gil Hodges (14) and Casey Stengel (37) and baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson's (42), also recognized by the franchise for their contributions to team and to the sport. |

If the Mets make the playoffs at all, the Dodgers will be 10:1 favorites against Mets in NLCS. This Dodger team, as constructed right now: best team ever?
I think the Mets need to start thinking about Vientos in the line up in 2022. 17 homers in last 6 weeks. Wow. Get him the heck up to AAA.
Pete Alonso’s “453” foot upper decker was, like many homers, way under-measured. It looked like 453 feet just to where it landed in the upper deck. That was a 500 footer if the stands weren’t in the way. Easy.
Vientos to AAA? Heck get him to NYC.
This is the day of the trade deadline period that always frosts my ass.
Teams like LAD, SD, & NYY have invested more in scouting and spent tons more for International 16 year old.
For every Francisco Alvarez they each have 5.
Gives you the kind of pipeline depth you need to pull off big trades while, at the same time, not deplete your system.
The Mets haven't made a significant trade yet, but neither have the Phillies or the Braves. The Marlins have gotten rid of Dickerson/Marte/Garcia, and the Nats just had a fire sale. Looks like the NL East has become a three-team race.
Well said Mack
Biggest Mets 🔑 for me is deGrom. No deGrom no deep playoff run - no matter how bad the NL East gets.
As presently constructed, the Mets are limping along and it’s hard to expect them to overtake the Dodgers and Padres in talent. However, with a pitching staff on the IL and a MIA offense, this team’s 22-23 record the last two months speaks volumes. Truth is, they aren’t undermanned and need to make a trade, they are underperforming and hence it’s hard to know how long that will last. So, do you trade a prospect for a rental? How good a rental? Corasco, Walker, Stroman, Hill and Megill make the pitching staff solid enough to wait on the The Ace. And while we all agree the hitting sucks, the upgrade shouldn’t be Davis but rather Conforto - and you can’t do that. So, what’s to trade fir, just to say you made one and lose years of production in a prospect or even a good player like Davis?
I hope the Mets realize their reality and look to make a small move to get some offense (Schwarber would have been ideal) and try to trade off their duplicity - such as one of their first basemen - for some solid help. For example, would the Twins do Donaldson for Dom Smith? Put McNeil in left field or even JD Davis.
Nice Post!!
