Chacin debuts with 6.0 scoreless innings, Murphy launches grand slam
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 25, 2021) – The St. Lucie Mets blew out the Bradenton Marauders 15-0 on Sunday afternoon at Clover Park to take four of six games in the series (Box Score).
Jose Chacin was called up from the FCL Mets to make the Sunday start and he impressed with 6.0 scoreless innings to get the win. He scattered three singles, walked just one batter and struck out five. Chacin retired 11 batters in a row at one point.
The Mets gave Chacin and early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning. The Mets were assisted by sloppy play by the Marauders. Jaylen Palmer started the inning by reaching on an error. Omar De Los Santos was then plunked by starter Jared Jones. Jose Peroza followed with a RBI single. A throwing error by outfielder Hudson Head also brought home De Los Santos for a 2-0 Mets lead.
Peroza scored from third base later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
The game remained 3-0 through the seventh inning stretch. The Mets pulled away by scoring seven runs in the seventh. Palmer got the scoring started with a bases loaded infield single. The umpires never stopped play and Saunders rounded the bases and was credited with a two-run inside-the-park homer. Bradenton manager Jonathan Johnston was ejected for arguing. Bench coach Jim Horner asked the umpires to get together and reverse the call but after discussion the umpires stayed with the ruling on the field.
The Mets added more runs in the seventh inning on a two-run double by Brandon McIlwain for a 10-0 lead.
Saunders hit another run-scoring single in the eighth. Two batters later Tanner Murphy crushed a grand slam to left field off of Parker Brahms to make it 15-0. It was the Mets second grand slam of the season and Murphy's third homer of the year.
All nine Mets hitters reached base and eight of the nine collected a hit. Palmer extended his hitting streak to eight games.
