Mack - Draft Thoughts: Ivan Melendez, Nasier Mule, Andruw Jones, Dalton Rushing, Termarr Johnson

On Wednesday, Texas Longhorns designated hitter/first baseman Ivan Melendez announced via Twitter that after being selected in the 16th round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins, he’ll return to the Forty Acres for his junior season on 2022.

Ranked as a top-200 prospect by ESPN, Melendez fell in the draft due to concerns about his glove after only playing a handful of games at first base in 2021 and then asked for above slot value after he was selected with the No. 479 pick.

After transferring from Odessa College, the 6’3, 225-pounder hit .319 with 13 home runs and 51 RBI in his first season at Texas. During a remarkable stretch in April, Melendez hit home runs in six consecutive games, setting a school record.

Mack’s spin -

For now, I have placed him on my board as the 6th first baseman.

Nazier Mulé, RHP/SS, Passaic Co Tech High School (N.J.)

One of the best names in the class is Nazier Mulé from New Jersey. The prep two-way has plenty to like and has been atop the ’22 draft class for some time. There’s no telling exactly where he will end up in the rankings, but then again, who knows where the Detroit Tigers will be picking.

Mulé is committed to play his collegiate ball with the Miami Hurricanes down in the 305, but he’ll likely be taking his talents to the big leagues as a high-first rounder. He’s a shortstop and right-handed pitcher with plenty to enjoy.

Mack’s spin -

I currently have him as late first rounder and my 4th SS.

7-20-21 - TTF -

Druw Jones, OF, Wesleyan HS (FL)

Why does this dude remind me of former MLB star Andruw Jones? Because it’s his son, that’s why! Welcome to the prospect ranks Druw Jones. His athletic ability is among the best in this year’s crop. He’s 6’3″ and has the skills and instincts to stay in centerfield full-time. Much like a few other prospects on this list, he has plus-plus speed and amazes in the field and at the plate. The exit velocity off his bat is eye-popping. Much like Green, he has five-tool potential.

Mack’s spin -

Forget who his father is. Drue is a hell of a talented outfielder on his own and I have him as my 2nd on my outfield board.

7-19-21 - PG College Baseball @PGCollegeBall

Dalton Rushing (Louisville, Bourne Braves the active leader in batting average (.338) on the Cape this summer. Rushing shows compact plus power to all fields. Impressive BP

Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

Rushing has really trimmed up and gotten a lot stronger since this time last year at Louisville. Figures to be a key cog in the Cardinals lineup in 2022 and has a chance to be one of the better hitters in the ACC

Mack’s spin -

In 2011, Rushing was a sophomore C/1Bman attending the University of Louisville. He hit .308 in 2020 and, playing backup to 2021 overall 1st round pick Henry Davis, hit .254 in 67 at-bats with four homers.

Keep an eye on this kid for the 2022 draft.

7-16-21 - PG Showcases @PGShowcases

Termarr Johnson (2022 Atlanta, GA) This bat is INCREDiBLE! Pulls the hands in with two strikes and demolishes this ball into the RF bleachers!

Perfect Game Scout @PG_Scouting

Termarr Johnson (‘22, GA) gets things started with a towering solo blast to the trees in right-center. Supreme power and elite bat speed on display all summer

Mack’s spin -

An easy early projection as a first round pick.

Right now, I have him coming off the board as the top shortstop in the 2020 draft.
