The Mets Mack Attack - 1-12-9

MLB – NY Mets:

Even though Tim Redding is only going to be their fifth starter, he could have a major impact on how the Mets decide to proceed with the rest of their rotation. The Mets now only have one left handed pitcher in their rotation (Johan Santana), which could leave them vulnerable to the Phillies power hitting left handed hitters (Howard, Utley, Ibanez). Adding another left handed starting pitcher would give the Mets a better chance to have a favorable match-up against their arch rival. So what does all this mean? I think that Omar Minaya should back off his pursuit of Derek Lowe. With rumors swirling that the Braves are going all in on Lowe, now would be a good time for the Mets to step aside and focus their efforts on Oliver Perez, who is only 27 and great against lefties. Lowe would be a wonderful addition to the Mets rotation, but at this point I'm skeptical about giving him a fourth year or another $10-$15 million more than the Mets original offer (3 years/$36 million).

I'm doing pretty good. I'm following everything I was supposed to follow with the recovery and everything has been fine," Johan Santana said in an interview with SNY. "I'm just trying to do my thing one step at a time, but I'm feeling much better right now and hopefully I'll be ready for spring training. I know there was a lot of expectations and a lot of people expecting a lot of things from me. I was the same way,but at the same time I knew changing leagues, I had to go through a learning process. And that took me a little time. but then I made my adjustments and went from there. I've always said it's not about how you start, it's about how you finish."

Guess who else showed up in Venezuela? None other than Francisco Rodriguez, the Mets' excitable new big-bucks closer. K-Rod allowed a run in earning a save on Dec. 21, then looked much better in striking out the side in an inning of work on Dec. 29.

SNY's "Mets Hot Stove", Kevin Burkhardt was joined via phone by Mets ace Johan Santana. Even though it was a brief conversation, Santana once again showed that he is a class act who puts the team's interests before his own. When asked if would be playing for Venezuela in this year's World Baseball Classic, Santana said it was possible. However, he made it clear that the Mets doctors would have to approve it first and that of course winning with the Mets is more important than playing in the World Baseball Classic at this point in his career.

The Florida Marlins are talking with SP Pedro Martinez. According to ESPNdeportes.com, the club has had discussions regarding free agent Pedro Martinez. The report states that the Marlins may have begun preliminary contract talks with the 37-year-old right-hander, and the two sides are expected to continue talking next week. An industry source told MLB.com that Martinez and his agent, Fernando Cuza, are in the Dominican Republic. Early next week, the source said, Martinez is expected to express his intentions to the Mets, as well as measure interest on the market

The Marlins have had no discussions concerning free agent Pedro Martinez, according to the Miami Herald. An ESPN.com report from Saturday had the two sides arranging a meeting, but well-informed sources with the Herald believe that rumor to be false. Martinez is probably out of the Marlins' price range and the Fish don't have any immediate plans to engage in serious talks. - Source: Miami Herald

When asked if the Mets will be at all pursuing Manny Ramirez, I was given an emphatic “no”. Unless things change, Manny will not be roaming left field for the Mets. The team is perfectly content using Daniel Murphy and Fernando Tatis in left field, with an eye on star prospect Fernando Martinez coming up at some point in 2009. The team is unlikely to block Martinez with a multi-year commitment to an outfielder. But when asked if the Mets would consider somebody like Bobby Abreu if he fell to a 1 year deal, a source said “it’s possible.”

AAA – Buffalo:

Toby Hyde on : - Andy Braunstein of the Mets and Yankee Reporter, which appears to have no web presence I can link to, attended Tobi Stoner’s performance in the PWL on Wednesday and sent out an email with his observations. The best news says Braunstein was that twice, Stoner retired Pudge Rodriguez with a runner aboard. Braunstein writes: All in all it was a typical Stoner performance, using mainly FBs ….hiding the ball well and good placement to get soft pops, soft GB and easy flys. On the other hand: The only down notes, his FB barely reached 90, mostly 85-88.

Top prospect Fernando Martinez is continuing to live up to the hype with his performance in the Venezuelan League. At year's end, Martinez had seven doubles, five triples and six homers in 153 at-bats, good for a .542 slugging percentage to pair with a .376 on-base.

AA – B-Mets:

Rated by Baseball America as owning the best changeup and the best control among Mets prospects, Dillon Gee is putting those tools to good use in Puerto Rico. The 22-year-old Texan didn't allow more than three earned runs in any of his first 10 starts, with a seven-inning, five-strikeout shutout to punctuate his ascendant 2008

Brooklyn Bums on: - Lucas Duda- “The Dude” was another amazingly consistent offensive threat during his time in Brooklyn, where he hit .299 with 34 RBI. Last season in St. Lucie, Duda drove in 66 runs in 483 Abs, which both led the team. Not an amazing defensive player, Duda does possess a strong throwing arm and the desire to cover more space than people give him credit for. However, if Duda does make the big leagues one day, it won’t be because of his defense. Capable of putting up similar numbers to Ryan Church in his last season with the Nationals, Duda is a doubles machine and is excellent at taking advantage of a pitcher’s mistakes. He also draws his fair share of walks, which is always a good thing and something that isn’t teachable to most young players. I expect to see him do that a lot this season as a matter of fact and even feel he’s capable of hitting for more power. If he starts off hot, expect some serious time at Binghamton and maybe even a cup of coffee in September

Alumni:

The Washington Nationals and showing interest in OF Xavier Nady.

Puerto Rican Winter League Playoffs - Arecibo 11, Santurce 1 - Reds prospect Chris Heisey hit a three-run homer to cap a six-run fifth inning as the Lobos blasted the Cangrejeros to even their series at 1-1. Major League veteran Raul Casanova doubled, homered and scored three times, while fellow catcher Rene Rivera doubled twice and drove in three runs for the Lobos.

Dominican Winter League Playoffs - Licey 4, Azucareros 3 - Nationals infielder Anderson Hernandez singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Tigres ran their round-robin record to 7-4. Cardinals prospect Amaury Cazana notched his fifth straight multi-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a homer, for Licey.
