The Future Of: Catcher

Boy, this is a tough one.

The current Mets catching crew just get by.

Omir Santos has been a pleasant addition, but, sadly, Brian Schneider, hasn't been. No, I'm not going to mention that this would be the time to slot Jesus Flores into the mix...

It looks to me that Santos will stick next year, but the Mets will have to look to free agency or trades to improve this position in 2010.

2011 wise, looks brighter. Josh Thole is becoming quite the prospect, but I still put him in the Daniel Murphy category of almost a starter. Thole will get one more year to work defensively, which he has already proved he can use the bat effectively for the position. I expect him to make the jump in 2011, but I'm not sure if he's a starter yet.

Beyong Thole, it's a crap shoot:

Francesco Pena - in his thrid year in the Mets organization, Tim Tuefel is giving him day-to-day duties to determine if the kid has it. So far, he doesn't. The power that the Mets expected never developed and he's hitting around the Mendoza line all year in Lucy. Yes, his defense has improved, but didn't it have to?

Dock Doyle - currently in extended for reasons I can't seem to determine. I guess he will start for Brooklyn, but he's a long way away

There's a lot of funy names past that, but for now, the catcher position only offers Thole for the future:

Mets future: 2010 - undetermined

2011 - Josh Thole as backup
