Some more Stuff

B-Mets:

So this is the weird thing about covering minor-league baseball - especially at a level like Double A ... You look at the score, and see the B-Mets' seventh consecutive loss. You see a team that's now 17 games below .500, a team that's won just five games in June ... But then you watch the game and see Ike Davis play well, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and two walks. You see Jenrry Mejia dazzle for five innings, striking out seven and walking two, only to give up a bomb of a home run that gave Bowie the lead for good.(By the way, one of Mejia's fastballs showed up on the NYSEG Stadium radar gun at 102 miles per hour. No way on knowing how accurate that was ... but still, 102 flashed on the screen. Last guy I remember hitting triple digits in this park was Matt Lindstrom back in 2006.)

Clones:

The Baby Mets may have had stars on their jerseys for Barack Obama night on Tuesday, but Brandon Moore didn’t need any.

He was a star all by himself.

On his game all night, the second-year Clone gave up just four hits in seven scoreless innings of work, leading “Baracklyn” to a 7-3 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades.

“I’ve been in a groove since extended spring training,” said Moore. “It just carried on to today. I felt great out there.”

The Cyclones coaching staff was pleased with his performance as well.

“He’s made big strides from last season in Kingsport,” said Clones skipper Pedro Lopez. “It’s unbelievable.”

The Renegades pitching staff was not solid however, as Glenn Gibson, Jordi Amargos and Jeffrey Cinadr gave up seven runs on seven hits and an error, courtesy of RBI hits by John Servidio, Matt Bouchard, Ralph Henriquez, Alex Gregory and Juan Centeno.

Queens:

Gary Sheffield did not play yesterday for the second-straight game.

He has just four at bats since last Friday.

Jerry Manuel told reporters that he is trying to keep Sheffield fresh, adding, “It’s no secret that his legs are still somewhat bothering him.”

Sheffield, however, later said:

“I agree with whatever he wants to do. If I’m in the lineup, I’m ready to go. If I’m not, I have to be prepared to come off the bench, and that’s what I came here for.”

Ummm, what’s the point of getting Sheffield rest, if there is a chance the team can’t score enough runs to stay in the pennant race? Play the man.

I realize Manuel is simultaneously trying to get Fernando Tatis hot, but it isn’t happening… the team needs Sheffield’s punch, as well as his presence right now

Mets Alumni:

Armando Benitez blew a 5-3 lead in the Atlantic League All Star Game, giving up four runs in the ninth innings. Andrew Mees, who covered the game for NYBD, was there live and has the blow by blow in game blog that you can read here. It still doesn’t make up for Game 1 of the 2000 World Series

Scott Kazmir (30 DXL)The Rays also got some good news on the pitching front. During his start in Triple-A, Kazmir looked... well, nothing at all like the Kazmir we've seen so far in 2009. He showed good velocity, solid mechanics, a nice mix of pitches, and (gasp) efficiency in his six innings of work. In fact, he looked so much better than Clay Buchholz, his opponent, that one observer told me this was a big negative for Buchholz. "It wasn't a good outing for Buchholz, and he's better than that, but the contrast was huge. I'm not sure if that says more about [Kazmir] or Buchholz though." Let's take the positive view and say that it's the payoff from his work with ASMI and with Rick Peterson, plus a little less time at Venue, that has Kazmir back to the place he needs to be physically, mentally, and mechanically. Kazmir could return to the Rays and be back into their rotation as soon as his next start.

Carlos Gomez isn't the world's fastest man, but if Monty Python was still staging the 100-meter dash for people with no sense of direction, Gomez would be the leading candidate to cross one of the finish lines first.
His stint starting in center field might soon end, which would lower Ron Gardenhire's blood pressure and the interest level of any Twins fan who cares about random entertainment as much as the final score.
"You scratch your head when the good things happen,'' Cuddyer said. "It's like, geez, how did anybody ever do that. And then other times you scratch your head ... for other reasons."
