The Herd:
Competition usually brings out the best in athletes.
And Lance Broadway is no different.
Competing for the number five spot in the Herd starting rotation, the 25-year-old turned in his best performance of the year; as the Herd held on to beat the Chiefs, 5-4, Tuesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse.
Broadway threw six solid innings to earn his first victory in a Bisons uniform. Of the three hits allowed, only one reached the outfield grass. A Ryan Langerhans double in the fourth inning led to the only run allowed by the right-hander.
Broadway struck out two and walked only two as the Chiefs never really mounted a serious threat against the Texan. Catcher Rene Rivera had something to do with that as well, gunning down two Syracuse base runners.
Mike Lamb provided the offensive punch for the Herd. The veteran went 4-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI.
The third time was the charm for the Bisons on Tuesday night against Chiefs' starter Marcus Estrada (3-2).

Eric Brown tied a season-high with seven innings of work in his fifth start of the year but Ian Desmond’s solo home run in the seventh inning hung him with the loss in Harrisburg’s 3-2 triumph over the B-Mets Tuesday night at Metro Bank Park. Brown earned a quality start by giving up just three runs on nine hits with six strikeouts in the seven-inning start.
Brown retired the first two hitters in the seventh inning with ease before Desmond came to the plate. On an 0-1 pitch, Desmond smashed a fastball over the right-field wall for his third home run of the season to break the 2-2 tie. It was the biggest of his three hits on the night.
Harrisburg (23-38) tallied first against Brown in the third inning. The B-Mets starter, who had retired eight consecutive to start the game, walked Erik Arnesen, the Senators starting pitcher, with two outs. Desmond followed with a single to move Arnesen up to second. Then Leonard Davis came up a hooked a double down the right-field line to score Arnesen and provide a 1-0 advantage.
Binghamton (26-37) was quick to take the lead away from the Senators as they plated two in the proceeding half inning. Nick Evans started of the fourth with a double to straightaway center. He was moved up to third on a Josh Thole groundball to the right side. After Arnesen walked Duda, Shawn Bowman struck out. Then with Carl Loadenthal at the plate, Lucas Duda took off for second on a delayed steal and Senators’ catcher Luke Montz fired a throw of the glove of Desmond that caromed into left-center allowing Evans to take home on the double steal. Loadenthal proceeded to single in Duda, giving the B-Mets a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Harrisburg tied things up on an RBI single from Marvin Lowrance. It was the third of three straight hits. Bill Rhinehart started off the frame with a double to the alley in left-center and was followed by an Ofilio Castro single to put runners at the corners.
Arnesen threw 5.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts to notch a no-decision. Luis Atilano, regularly a starter for Harrisburg, snatched the win going 1.1 innings of shutout ball after Arnesen exited. Clint Everts picked up his first AA save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Lucy:
The St. Lucie Mets blew a three run lead and fell to the Daytona Cubs 5-4 on Monday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The Mets scored all four of their runs in the third innng. Ike Davis doubled in a run and Francisco Pena and Matt Couchard had RBI singles. The other run was unearned. For the Cubs, the winning run was scored in the eighth, as Robinson Chirinos singled and scored on a double by Jake Opitz.
Emary Frederick (2-4) took the loss in relief.
Gnats:
Savannah used two home runs, one by Jean Luc Blaquiere and one by Wilmer Flores, to help drop the Rome Braves, 6-3, Tuesday night at State Mutual Stadium. It is the Sand Gnats first win in Rome in 2009.
Flores’ home run proved to be the game-winner as the 17-year-old’s blast landed just over the wall in left field with one on and two away in the fifth. The home run broke a, 3-3, tie game and was the second of the year for the Valencia, Ven. native. Savannah added on an insurance run in the eighth when Josh Satin singled in Jefry Marte.
Starting pitcher Jeurys Familia (4-4) earned his fourth win of the season, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Josh Stinson worked 1.1 innings to bridge the gap between Familia and the closer, Rhiner Cruz, who retired the final six men for his eighth save of 2009.
The Gnats started the scoring in the first when Satin doubled in Marte with two down for his first RBI of the evening. He finished the game 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and now leads the team in that category with 35. Marte was the only other Gnat to collect multiple hits as he went 2-for-4.
Rome’s starter Brett DeVall (4-3) was handed the defeat. DeVall lasted six innings and allowed five runs on six hits.

The 2009 Cyclones reported to Brooklyn on Monday, coming to the Big Apple from all over the world.As most fans know, the Cyclones roster will change quite frequently throughout the season, particularly in the coming days as draftees are signed by the Mets and assigned to various levels of the organization.The current iteration of the Cyclones roster is made up of both new names and familiar faces, with a mix of first-time pros and returnees wearing the Brooklyn uniform.
And don't forget...on Tuesday, June 16th and Wednesday, June 17th, fans will have a chance to MEET the 2009 Cyclones before the season starts. On Tuesday, the Cyclones players, coaches, mascots, and Beach Bums will be at Prospect Park to meet and interact with fans. The team will be on the Long Meadow, at the 9th Street entrance of the park, from 6pm to 8pm, and will be handing out goodies, signing autographs, and taking pictures.On Wednesday, the Cyclones will be at Borough Hall from 11:30am to 1:30 pm, again meeting with Brooklyn fans.
