The Mets confirmed Thursday that they've made an offer to Bengie Molina. - Molina, 30, hit .265/.285/.442 this past season and reached the 20-homer plateau for the first time in his career. The Mets have loaded up on backup catching options this offseason but still need a starter. The Astros also acquired Matt Lindstrom, who along with Lyon will essentially replace Hawkins and Jose Valverde at the back end of the bullpen. Unlike the Lyon deal, I actually like the acquisition of Lindstrom. With the Rays being one of the rumored places for him before the trade, I brushed on some of his history and I can see why teams would take a chance on him. 30 in February, Lindstrom has the velocity scouts swoon over. However, that hasn't turned into the strikeout rates one would expect. His 7.55 career K/9 is not that impressive and he has walked over four batters per nine in each of the last two seasons. His ERA of 5.89 is inflated by a .342 BABIP, but his career FIP of 4.22 suggests that he is pretty much Brandon Lyon for less. - BTBS
It kills their fans that there’s been no overwhelming response to last year’s 92-loss season, the third year in a row the Mets have been left behind in October. Unlike the Yankees, who spent $435 million on three players after missing out on the playoffs in 2008, the Mets seem to have stopped dead in their tracks. There’s still time, of course, and maybe the Mets will get lucky with Holliday in particular if the Red Sox refuse to meet his price. If the pool of suitors comes down to the Mets and the Cardinals, Mets’ fans will learn Jeff Wilpon meant what he said in October when he declared, “Ownership is dedicated to delivering a championship-caliber team.” -

Licey 4, Escogido 1 (12 innings) - Twins lefty Francisco Liriano allowed one hit over 3 2/3 innings -- retiring the last nine batters he faced -- but the Tigres scored three late runs to top the Leones in extra innings. Former Major Leaguer Timo Perez hit the decisive RBI single, while Wily Mo Pena (Mets) went 3-for-6 with a solo homer in the ninth. Major League free agent Jorge Sosa, making the start for Licey, allowed one hit over five scoreless innings.
