4/5/10

4-5 - EX-METS: - Anderson Hernandez, Nelson Figueroa, Bobby V, Orel Hershiser... and Gus Bell

Anderson Hernandez:

Indians designated INF Anderson Hernandez for assignment. The 27-year-old journeyman infielder was claimed off waivers just a few weeks ago from the Mets, but obviously failed to impress Cleveland management. He batted just .251/.312/.339 with three homers and 37 RBI between Washington and New York last season. - rotoworld

Nelson Figueroa

4-4 from: - http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#!/notes/mets-today/final-cuts-analysis/408146524594  - Cut – He’s not a Cy Young candidate. He’s barely an MLB-quality 5th starter. However, he had a spectacular spring, he had a great winter campaign, he had an outstanding year at AAA in 2009, and he was arguably the Mets’ best starter after Johan Santana went down last year. Further, he may not have the best-looking “stuff”, but he manages to get the most out of it and compete. The irony is that three of the pitchers who will be in the rotation — Mike Pelfrey, John Maine, and Oliver Perez — have much more talent, yet they don’t always pitch to their potential because they are often lacking in the “4 C’s” that Figgy depends on: craftiness, composure, consistency, and competitiveness. I would’ve kept Figgy around for no reason other than to hope that those traits would somehow rub off on the Mets’ youngsters and eternal enigmas — or at least, to be an inspiration of sorts. Unfortunately, it’s hard to win the #5 spot in the rotation when it is held by someone due $24M over the next two years. How Figueroa didn’t at least earn a job as a long man in the bullpen, though, is mind-boggling.

Bobby V:

Q: What do you miss most about managing?

A: I always liked the preparation to do battle. I love the competition. I don’t know which one I’d miss most. I know what I won’t miss . . . talking about a loss . . . talking about dealing with injuries . . . having to always come up with answers where a lot of times the questions don’t have explicit answers. - NYP

Orel Hershiser:

When ESPN parted ways with Steve Phillips in the wake of his, um, personal issues, many voices - including this one - said his old Mets pal Bobby Valentine would be an intriguing replacement. And he would have been. But when the Bristol Stompers settled on Orel Hershiser, who has been on their roster since 2006, the decision was difficult to argue. For one thing, Hershiser is smart and sharp, and he will be a fresh voice added to the 21-year team of Jon Miller and Joe Morgan. For another, he could well be in this for the long haul, while Valentine likely will be back in uniform within a year or two. - philly.com

Gus Bell:

The Mets played their first game ever on April 11, 1962. The rain delayed affair was played before a crowd of 16,147 who watched the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Amazins’ on Opening Day by a score of 11-4. Roger Craig started for the Mets and lasted just three innings, but more importantly, National League baseball was back in New York. On Opening Day in 1962, right fielder Gus Bell stroked the first hit in Mets history, a single in the top of the second inning. First baseman Gil Hodges would hit the first homerun in franchise history two innings later, a solo shot to leadoff the fourth. -  metsmerizedonline
