5 4 4-6: Tranactions, Jon Niese, Ruben Tejada, The Reyes Era... and BP ST Recap

Transactions:

April 4 - 2010 Assigned INF Russ Adams, RHP Kiko Calero, RHP Bobby Parnell, RHP Elmer Dessens and OF Chris Carter to Buffalo (IL).

Designated 3B Shawn Bowman and P Nelson Figueroa for assignment.

Released 2B Alexjando Mechado and P Neal Musser.

Jonathan Niese:

All this means that Jonathon Niese, who just a week ago was still battling for a spot on the major league roster, is now being fitted for the third spot in the rotation (not that the order of the rotation is all that important). Niese might actually be able to deliver on that spot, though he might also struggle, much as Pelfrey did (and still does). Maine and, especially, Perez, have the talent to be middle of the rotation pitchers. So, as an upside, the team might have an above average rotation behind Santana. More likely, though, is that team gets subpar contributions from at least one, probably two or three and possibly all four pitchers. - HBT

Ruben Tejada

4-4 from: - link  - (made the team) – The Mets start the arbitration clock, and waste an option, on someone who will be sent down in a week and who is unlikely to return to MLB until 2011 or 2012. The public line is that Tejada has superior defensive skills compared to others in the organization, but that’s not saying much. If Tejada had Rey Ordonez-like wizardry, I might understand the move, but he doesn’t — at best, Tejada is an above-average shortstop, but one who like most young shortstops, also makes a lot of errors. There is only one reason he made the team: so that Omar Minaya and co. can continue to force the mirage that “the Mets have a strong minor league system that can produce MLB-quality players”. It’s a sham, a total PR move to incite journalists to write positive things about the farm system and help Minaya keep his job.

The Reyes Era:

Call me a pessimist, but I’m not sure the Mets will ever have a Reyes era. At this rate, he will never have great years the way Don Mattingly and Nomar Garciaparra did before they fell apart. It’s easy to blame ownership, because the franchise does not feel or act as pleasant as it used to. Did Bernie Madoff siphon off too much money and attention span? Could be. Omar Minaya, whom I like, is supposed to be a shrewd judge of talent, but how come Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain, who competed for the fifth spot on the Yankees, are better than the second starter on the Mets, whoever that is? -

BP ST Recap:

As their winter of discontent showed, the Mets are hardly free and clear of last year's injury-pocked nightmare, particularly because they spent all their shekels on Jason Bay while skimping on depth. The rotation behind Johan Santana is a fright, forecast for a combined 4.58 ERA and still dependent upon the wishful thinking that Oliver Perez and John Maine can rebound to 2007 form. As for the lineup, Jose Reyes should be back soon, but with no better subs than Gary Matthews Jr. for Carlos Beltran (who has yet to run, let alone play this spring), or Mike Jacobs for Danny Murphy (to say nothing of Murphy for a major-league caliber first baseman), the only conclusion to be reached is that OMAR, UR DOIN IT RONG. That article by Vecsy in the NYT, mentioning the Reyes Era, was a terrible article, written at a terrible time by an otherwise fine writer. A complete downer piece fraught with inaccuracies. Poor George can't hide his Yankee stripes,or the foul impulse to hit a team when they are down and about to get up. Yesterday's game put a thumb in his eye.

Your way to negative for me.

In a short time Reyes will be back, and be very, very good.

Murphy in just a few weeks will be back, and his growth last year, was really good, and it will be like that this year.

Then Beltran should be back near the 1st of May. And will fill the line up to be one of the best in the majors.

The only real problem is the last 4 starters. To bad there was not enough FA of enough value, or the desire to be on the club out there to get.

But one never knows what could happen. Maybe enough of the staff will be good enough to go.
