4/15/10

DRAFT: - Kolbrin Vitek, LeVon Washington, Bryce Harper, Jedd Gyorko... and Matt Harvey

Kolbrin Vitek:

4-14 from: - link   - Kolbrin Vitek, Junior, Ball St. Univ. shoots to the top of the second base rankings off the strength of a fine first half, but also due to the failure of any other player to step-up and make their own claim to the slot. Vitek is slashing .420/.507/.739, while walking around once every seven at bats and posting a neat 1.0 BB/SO. He shows some pop and is a good athlete that moves well both on the bases and in the field.

LeVon Washington:

4-14 from: - http://pnrscouting.com/rankings_2010_midseason_secondbase.html  - LeVon Washington, Freshman, Chipola JC (Fla.) is still a 1st Round threat. Reports from Florida indicate his speed hasn't been the "80" shown prior to last year's draft, and of course his arm strength will in part dictate his ultimate slot. After a hand injury and a slow start at the plate, he has righted the ship some -- through twenty-seven games, he has a slash line of .348/.455/.620, even showing some pop (though he still projects more as a gap-to-gap threat as a pro).

Bryce Harper:

4-14 from: - http://web.goldenspikesaward.com/index.html?page=news_archive&article_id=65  - But, after going 5-for-13 with three home runs in Southern Nevada's four-game sweep of JC of Southern Idaho this weekend, Harper is hitting .422/.516/.891 with 15 home runs and 42 RBIs in 128 at-bats. He has already breezed past the single-season school record for home runs [12, by Joe Wagner, with metal bats in 2001]. He has 54 hits -- 29 of them for extra bases.

Jedd Gyorko:

4-14 from: - link  - Jedd Gyorko, Junior, West Virginia Univ. had a strong showing on the Cape and has hit reasonably well this year, as well, slashing .359/.452/.725. He has also shown the ability to drive the ball with a strong, stocky trunk, but tends to sacrifice some contact ability when he does so. The biggest shortcoming holding-up his value may be that he doesn't really fit anywhere in the infield (he's a shortstop at WVU). He may lack the arm strength and power profile to play third at the next level, and footwork and range could potentially be an issue at second base. For now, he sticks as a top five second baseman, but he could stand to up his defensive game some in the coming months, including crisper actions at short (particularly in his set-ups and throws). Each player's preseason ranking on this list is in parenthesis, green indicating upward movement, red downward and blue neutral:

Matt Harvey:

4-13 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=4361060202  - Also in regards to Matt Harvey, his delivery is cleaner than last summer yes and last spring, yes, but still the same kid with a much better breaking ball. He might be best suited as a closer in the big leagues also John Smoltz or Steve Bedrosian, I don't think he has 5 plus inning in him every 4 days and be consistent, but who knows once he's in pro ball. Top 50 guy for sure.
