The Final Cuts

As you all know, they came down last night.

Frankly, no surprises.

On a personal note, I am disappointed that both Chris Carter and Nelson Figueroa were cut, but I got used to this process the day after the Dodgers traded Jackie Robinson to the Giants.

For some reason, neither Carter nor Figueroa stood a chance. It seemed that every AAA first baseman left unprotected was signed during the off-season, and then to complicate matters even more, along comes Mike Jacobs. Carter did what he does best… hit.

And, hit he did, but you just knew it didn’t matter how many home runs he hit against minor league pitching. This kid never stood a chance, which makes one wonder why go through the whole process? Why not offer Billy Wagner arbitration and either wind up with two top draft picks or an 8th/9th inning combo from hell?

The Figueroa cut was the deepest. Again, you just knew he wasn’t going to make it to Queens. Nelson did everything he could to keep his mouth shut and suck it in while every pitcher in the world was run through the clubhouse. The frustration did get a little too much last week, but everything looked safe when the Mets started saying that he would be the mop up man come opening day.

Was this a cruel joke? Did this guy kill Jerry’s dog one day in the parking lot? Has there ever been someone treated worse by a ball team?

At this point, I have no idea who’s on the 25-man. Does this mean that Santos made the team?

That new CSI-produced medical show just came on CBS. Think I’ll watch that.

Looks like a big, bloody accident.

Fits.
