Abruzzo, Pugh, Mejia, Huchingson, Alvarez, Cordero

Major Thoughts on Minor Players:

The Mets made a couple of small roster moves this week, including the reinstatement of catcher Jordan Abruzzo, Abruzzo (that’s him on the far left) had been rehabbing in Florida for the GCL Mets, after spending the entire season on the DL. I remember seeing him during pitcher/catcher week at ST and he was very happy to be returning to behind the plate after being restricted for the second part of 2009 as DH only. His problems last year were a wing, which I assume carried over to this season, but you just can’t get a lot of injury information out of the organization. I had tried to reach him via Facebook; however, Jordan likes to keep things private, which I respect. The good news is one of the best pure bats is back playing baseball in the Mets organization. Anyone that has ever seen him hit will instantly understand why he re-wrote the books at San Diego. The sad news is this will be his third trip to Savannah, a stop he should be far past at 25-years old. I hope the Gnats play him behind the plate and play him often as well. He’s had a great 2008, going as far as hitting .300 for Savannah and .303 for St. Lucie, though he was used mostly as a DH.

I talked earlier today to OF Tillman Pugh and was happy to find out that he has returned to the GCL Mets roster. You may remember his first game as a Met (June 21) when he took a fast ball right off his face. Those who saw it live thought he was dead, and those that saw him the next day understood why Pugh wished he was dead. He was a mess, but the 15th round pick this year told me he feels fine and his face looks totally healed.

Look… if last night’s outing by Jenrry Mejia is the worst he ever pitches, we’ll have ourselves a future HOFer. Mejia went: 5.2-IP, 8-H, 3-ER, 3-BB, 5-K, and his AA-ERA “soared” to 2.70. Reports from the stadium were that he didn’t have the pinpoint accuracy he had his last outing, but the velocity was still there. Mejia is sitting at 96 now, and hit 98 again last night. Remember… the Mets really only need one more SP (Santana, Niese. Pelfrey, Dickey). This sure looks like a strong candidate for 2011 (btw… Mejia threw this game against Michael Cisco, son of ex-Met Galen Cisco).

How do you find something good in a K-Port game you just lost 8-0 on a three-hitter? Well the last two Mets innings were tossed by newbie 6-5 LHP Chase Huchingson. This makes two outings, 0-R, 3-IP, and 6-K. Love it so far. Here’s some wiki from his old school:

From: - http://www.ucasports.com/sport.asp?action=news&sportid=7&article=3800  - Former University of Central Arkansas baseball player Chase Huchingson was signed to a minor league contract by the New York Mets. The 6-3 left-handed outfielder/pitcher has been assigned to the Kingsport Mets of the Rookie Class Appalachian League. Huchingson, a native of Fayetteville, Ark., hit .236 in 89 at bats with 21 hits, three doubles, two home runs and 10 runs batted in. He made 13 appearances on the mound with 10 starts, going 1-4 with an 8.36 earned run average. Huchingson struck out 32 batters in 42 innings pitched.

While we’re on relief pitchers, two more continued to impress. Manuel Alvarez pitched two more scoreless innings last night for Binghamton, striking out four and lowering his ERA to 3.29. Over in Buffalo, Chad Cordero pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out two and giving up only one hit. His seasonal Buffalo ERA, after seven outings, is now 1.42. All this means nothing tonight, but you just may be reading about two members of 2011 Mets pen. More to follow…
