Mike Hessman:
link - First baseman Ike Davis was on the bench last night for the second time in three games (Mike Hessman started at first), but Manuel insisted he isn't headed toward a platoon. The manager said he just wants Davis rested. "There's a time where he will be the first baseman regardless of who pitches and you just find him a day here and there to give him a day off," Manuel said. "But right now, for me at least, the fresher I keep him the better he will be for the remainder of the season." The Mets could be showcasing Hessman, who cleared trade waivers earlier in the week and made his third straight start (he started at third on Thursday) and went 1-for-3 with a triple.
Mets Ban Dogs:
link - A federal judge has ordered the Mets to stop banning a kosher food company from selling snacks at CitiField during the Sabbath. "I cannot get involved in (a dispute) over rabbinical law," Brooklyn Judge Jack Weinstein said with a smile during a hearing Friday. Kosher Sports, which has a 10-year contract to sell franks and other good at the stadium, sued the Mets after being told they couldn't operate on Friday nights and Saturdays. The Mets say the company can't be kosher if they're operating during the Sabbath, when many religious Jews don't work
Minor Transactions:
link - Released: 2B James Ewing - Placed on restricted list: LHP Zach Dotson - Recalled: SS Ruben Tejada, OF Fernando Martinez - Optioned to Triple-A: OF Jesus Feliciano - Option transferred: RHP Jenrry Mejia (high Class A to Double-A) - Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Kyle Allen, RHP Brian Bruney, RHP Brant Rustich, 3B Jefry Marte - Reinstated from DL: RHP Samuel Martinez, RHP Scott Shaw, C Kai Gronauer, 3B Eric Campbell - In May, the Mets' top pick in the ’09 draft, lefty Steve Matz, had Tommy John surgery. The organization's bad luck with prep pitchers from that draft got a little bit worse when lefthander Zach Dotson, a 13th-round pick who signed for a well-above-slot $500,000, tested positive for Methylhexaneamine and was suspended for 50 games.
Jeurys Familia:
8-13-10 from: - link - Team: high Class A St. Lucie (Florida State)- Age: 20 - Why He's Here: 1-0, 0.66, 13 2/3, 11 H, 1 R, 1 HBP, 2 BB, 18 SO - The Scoop: Where has this been all year? Familia is one of the hardest throwers in the minor leagues, but when he pitches, balls have been been flying out faster than they've been coming in most of the year. Not so in his last two outings, his best two of the season. Familia still needs to develop a reliable breaking ball, and with nearly six walks per nine innings, his control has also gotten him in trouble this year. With his stuff and the effort in his delivery, the bullpen might be in Familia's future, but his most recent starts might be encouraging signs of progress.
Tim LaVigne:
link - Old Dominion University baseball coach Nate Goulet announced that former professional pitcher Tim LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va.) has been named an assistant coach and will be working with the pitchers. Since leaving professional baseball, LaVigne has volunteered at three Virginia Beach High Schools, coaching pitchers and providing help with mechanics and mental approach. LaVigne, a standout reliever at the University of Virginia played 11 seasons in the minors after being selected in the 32nd round of the 2000 Major League Baseball draft by the New York Mets. He also played in the New York Yankees and Houston Astros organizations. In 2002, LaVigne had 16 saves for Binghamton, the New York Mets AA affiliate. He had 22 saves, a 5-3 record with a 2.87 earned run average in 2009 with Acereros de Monclova in the Mexican league. He won six games in 2001 and 2009, as he finished his career with 109 saves and a 3.71 earned run average. Lavigne also fanned 451 batters in 664.2 innings of work.
