Q and A - Some Mets Questions

Mack

Longtime reader and fellow Sandlapper Met fan. I have a couple of questions I hope you can enlighten me on as well as some opinion.

1) Leathersich if he is a top 25 prospect and is being groomed for a future bullpen spot, why isn't he now or have been the closer for his current level team? Is Walters better suited for the closing role? Is it a right vs left situation? In the end does it matter?

I don't thing a righty or lefty matters in the closer role. Getting a batter out matters.

I questioned why Kolarek got promoted over 'Leather', plus I don't have any idea what the tinking is regarding how Binghamton slots in him in their pen. Remember, it' their pen and if he was projected as a future Queens closer, it really doesn't matter. The pitching coach in Binghamton decided what to do with his pitchers (unless the red phone rings).

Per Matt Cerrone

There is a nice little buzz starting around this kid, a) because he’s looking like he could be a nice arm in a future bullpen, and b) he’s really confident, aggressive and has a colorful on-field personality. They say he has really nice movement with his fastball, which works well for him because he has no fear of throwing in on guys. However, he still needs to work on being consistent with his delivery, especially when switching to his secondary pitches. Think of him on the Josh Edgin track, i.e., two years of Single-A, and hopefully moving through Double-A this year, and competing for the big-league bullpen next spring.

2) Now that St Lucie has promoted 2 starters to Bing, who would you like to see move up from Savannah, who do you expect, (not Cuan from the bullpen please) and do you anticipate a promotion from extended camp to replace anyone in Sav?

Well, first of all, both promotions were due to injuries so you want to first determine the long range plan for Mazzoni and Torres. If eithher of them will be coming off in the 7-day DL, you don't want to send another pitcher up from St. Lucie, especially if he is not ready.

My guess is it might be Cuan... or a piggy using Camarena and Fontanez.

Savannah is currently operating with 7 starters. They don't need more.

3)In the draft this year if one of the big name pitchers like Appel, Stanek or Gray falls to 11 for money reasons, do you take him and hope that a Judge falls to you at 48?

Go big with the first pick... and then, one of the outfielders (Wilson, Judge, Boldt, Ervin, Kemp, Lorensen) should be available at 48.
4) Will Sandy hold off on promotions this year and for trading for a big OF bat till after the season in hopes of landing a top 5 spot in next years draft? (Rodon from Raleigh would be nice)

Teams don't try and play 2013 to be one of the top 5 worst teams. If they did, the gM would be out of a job.

Nimmo will be in Lucy very soon and could finish the season in Binghamton. The Mets will get another top prospect outfielder for John Buck. Duda will remain in LF. Past that is all prayers for guys like dD, Kirk, Vaughn.
Thanks, always enjoy reading your thoughts.

If Nimmo finishes at Bingo, do you think he could be ready sometime in 2014? He'll be 21 next year, not an age where it's out of the question.

If so, I'd love to see the team try and trade for Starling Marte. He's a CF (some say better than McCutcheon) and he's being wasted in LF in Pittsburgh. He'd cost less than Stanton, although I don't think he's an option for a Buck trade with Russell Martin there....although if Martin continues stinking up the joint maybe it could work.

1. CF Marte
2. LF Nimmo
3. 3B Wright

Could be a great top of the lineup, as well as cheap and could stay together for the next 6 years at least.

All these injuries will slow down the youth movement. This is a conservative team when everyone is healthy.

Nimmo will be leaving Savannah soon and could finish this season in Binghamton.

I expect the d'Arnaud injury will prevent that second promotion.

Alderson has already said that Buck will not be traded. And he said it BEFORE Travis got hurt. So, now that Travis is hurt you can put an exclamation point on his previous statement.

As for the draft...I wouldn't ever presume to know who the Mets will pick. The last two drafts they certainly didn't pick the best available. Now, Nimmo is turning into a nice pick, but is still two years away. Sandy, to me, doesn't seem like the type of guy that " goes big" with his first pick. He seems to take the " nice looking player with a good eye".

I hope they pick the best bat available, but I won't be upset with the best pitcher available either. I've said this before, after the Shields and Dickey trades, it's a fact that nothing is more valuable then a surplus in starting pitching. I could see the Mets running with that and taking the best arm they can.

Imagine if DeGrom and Montero are both ready by spring 2014... You already have Harvey and Wheeler. Now add those two guys and your top 5 pitchers are outstanding. You could easily trade Niese for a top 5 prospect in baseball. If Gee starts pitching well, you can get a top 25 plus for him.

This is only possible because you still have Syndergaard, Fulmer, Matz, Mazzoni, Mateo and possibly your 2013 first rounder still in the system.

Also, I still wouldn't expect Sandy to trade any pitching prospects for an outfielder unless Stanton becomes available. Remember, they'll be about 40 to 50 million in payroll flexibility next off season so why deplete your farm system when you can simply buy a bat or two?

Since when does a GM show his hand? Just because he said Buck stays it doesn't make it so. The Mets were also going to re-sign Reyes. If he gets a solid offer Buck will be on another team.

Two years ago we used to say that Mejia and Familia would be ready in 2013.

They call this a 'fluid situation' now, right?

Did he trade Hairston? A much less vital player then Buck.

Also, Sandy NEVER said he'd resign Jose and by the way they didn't even make an offer you can theorize that he was never in their plans.

Alderson is truthful. Said he wanted to resign Dickey but would trade him for difference maker....RA was a CY young winner. Who the hell is Buck compared to RA? If he wanted to trade him or even if it was a possibility, he'd simply say it. Sandy said he's not being traded. Now, throw in Travis' injury....

I don't think he's getting traded.

Sandy didnt trade Hairston because he wanted more than the market would return for him. If he can get something he likes he'll move Buck.
