Goeddel Hits Lucky Sevens in B-Mets 3-0 Win
PORTLAND, ME – Erik Goeddel struck out seven over seven shutout innings to earn his seventh win as the Binghamton Mets defeated the Portland Sea Dogs, 3-0, Monday night at Hadlock Field. Cesar Puello stroked a pair of hits and drove in two runs to lead the offense.
After the threat of rain delayed the start for 84 minutes, the B-Mets used a two-out rally to get on the board in the second against Anthony Ranaudo. Rhyne Hughes stared the rally by pulling a double down the right-field line, his fourth extra-base hit in three games. Travis Taijeron followed with a walk and Xorge Carrillo laced a single up the middle to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Binghamton cashed in another walk from Ranaudo to double their lead in the third. Danny Muno led off the frame with a free pass, moved to second when Ranaudo air-mailed a pickoff throw and came home on Puello’s bouncer up the middle.
Goeddel calmly navigated through seven innings, never facing more than four batters in any frame. Using an even mixture of pitchers, the right-hander kept the Sea Dogs off-balance from start to finish.
The Sea Dogs threatened twice against the UCLA product, but never broke through. With one out in the third, Peter Hissey smacked a double off the Maine Monster in left field. Christian Vazquez attempted to score from first, but was thrown out on a perfect relay home from Puello in center and Wilfredo Tovar at short. Portland came close to cracking the scoreboard in the seventh, but failed to cash in on a leadoff double from Michael Almanzar.
Ranaudo settled in after Puello’s single in the third. The right retired nine straight B-Mets and capped his night with three scoreless innings. He was pulled after allowing two runs (one earned) on three walks and three hits over six innings.
Binghamton tacked on an insurance run in the eighth against reliever Jeremy Kehrt. Puello smoked a double off the base of the Monster and plated Josh Rodriguez from first base, giving Binghamton a three-run lead.
Pedro Feliciano took over in the eighth and worked around an error to post a scoreless frame, his fourth shutout appearance with Binghamton. Jeff Walters struck out the side in order in a perfect ninth to earn his league-leading 18th save.
Goeddel (7-2) walked one and scattered six hits, while keeping the Sea Dogs hitless in seven at-bats with runners in scoring position to pick up the win. Ranaudo (7-2) walked four in his first loss since May 7.
The B-Mets (47-28) continue their three-game set against the Sea Dogs Tuesday night at 7:00 PM. LHP Darin Gorski gets the ball against RHP Keith Couch. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
