Hot Stove: Two Mets Targets Off the Market, 40 Man Roster Moves Coming

The San Diego Padres last night announced that they have signed SP Josh Johnson to a 1 yr/$8 million contract. Johnson can earn an additional $1.25M for making 26 starts or more and the deal includes a club option for 2015 at $4M if he fails to make more than 6 starts. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reported that Johnson actually passed up more lucrative deals in favor of pitching in the most favorable pitchers park in all of baseball.

(Well shoot....I was one of the guys clamoring for Johnson but, from the sounds of it, he seemed to have wanted to go to San Diego the whole time. However what this does do is put caps on possible deals for Roy Halladay and Johan Santana.)

According to Jamie Kelly of Shutdown Inning, via Twitter, the Cleveland Indians have signed OF David Murphy. The deal is for 2 years and $12 million (AAV: $6M) with a 3rd year club option. Kelly broke the news after Murphy reportedly informed his daughter's daycare facility which she had a connection to.

(LOL.....talk about knowing the right people. Good job Jamie. I'm disappointed the Mets didn't make a run at Murphy either however he was on my 2nd tier of choices for the OF. His sabermetrics indicated that he was a MAJOR victim of the BABIP goddess' wrath. His BABIP was a ridiculous 80 points below his career average. You add those points back and he hits over .300 with a .360 OBP. Good value pick up for the Indians.)

All is quiet on the Mets front so far this week however today at 11:59PM is the deadline for adding players to the 40 man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft. Look for some flash reports today as the Mets make additions/non-tender/outright players in order to make room.

I don't really care too much about the Josh Johnson signing. He's another Chris Young waiting to happen...good when he pitches but it's not often enough to count upon to solve your pitching problems. Since the Mets are in 3-month mode on pitching when they can successfully promote younger players after their Super Two deadline has passed, you can get by with the likes of Harang, Dice-K or maybe Carlos Torres in addition to Jenrry Mejia. Of course, adding a real pitcher would open up the possibility of dealing Dillon Gee or Jon Niese for hitting, but that would require to much forethought and planning on the part of this front office.

My view on it is....If we signed a former top flight pitcher such as Roy Halladay or Josh Johnson and they turn around and pitch great...we could then turn them over into top prospects like we did with Dickey and Byrd.

Chris -

I like the way you think here.
