Diamondbacks' Patrick Corbin may miss entire season
The Arizona Diamondbacks had chosen sophomore starter Patrick Corbin as their Opening Day starter against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Australia. Saturday was Patrick's final tuneup as he prepared to make that start. Unfortunately, he had to leave the game in the seventh inning after experiencing some stiffness in his forearm. From ESPN:
Patrick had a superb rookie season, going 14-8 with a 3.41 ERA in thirty-two starts for Arizona. He was elected to the All-Star game and looked to be one of the brightest new stars out of the National League West.
At this point Patrick has two options. The first option is the dreaded Tommy John surgery. That would require a twelve to eighteen month recovery. Being ready for the start of next season would not be a guarantee but he would likely be back at some point next season. The second option is to take six weeks off and then start rehab. If that's the option he takes, he could still end up needing Tommy John surgery as re-injury is always a possibility at that point.
Arizona has now tabbed Wade Miley to start the opener in Australia. It's unknown just yet who Arizona will turn to for Patrick's spot in the rotation. Arizona has three in-house candidates they could choose from - prospect Archie Bradley, right-hander Randall Delgado or the long man out of the bullpen, Josh Collmenter. "Corbin said Sunday said he has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament and is getting a second opinion with noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews before deciding whether to try to rehab the injury or have surgery."
