May 30th 2014 -- Phillies 6, Mets 5 (14)

Friday night in Philadelphia, Chris Young muffed Marlon Byrd’s routine fly to start the bottom of 14^th inning, 3 batters later Reid Brignac hit a walk off single with the infield and outfield in. The Phillies beat the Mets in a marathon 6-5. Most of the scoring happened in the first 5 innings of the game.  The Mets staked Rafael Montero to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second, Lucas Duda hit an RBI single.  Bobby Abreu scored on a fielder’s choice by Travis d’Arnaud and Ruben Tejada brought home Duda with an RBI single. In the bottom of the 4^th trailing 3-1, the Phils knocked a struggling Montero out of the box on a 3 run homer by Dominick Brown (4) to make it 4-3.  In the top of the 5^th, the Mets took the lead again as Bobby Abreu hit a long double to deep right scoring Juan Lagares and Daniel Murphy to make it 5-4. In the bottom of the frame Brown drove in his 4^th run of the game with a fielder’s choice and the game was tied at 5. That’s how it stayed until the top of the 14^th.  Jenrry Mejia came in in the top of the innning , his 5^th appearance in 6 games, and Byrd hit a soft fly to Young in right and it just bounced off his glove. Byrd was on 2^nd with no out. Carlos Ruiz then hit a bullet up the middle to make it first and third. Terry Collins then intentionally walked Cesar Hernandez to load the bases and with the infield and outfield both in….Brignac hit one over Eric Campbell’s head in left to bring home the game winner.  Montero didn’t have it he only lasted 3 2/3’s he allowed 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 eared and walked 2.  After Montero, the Phils tied the game off Daisuke Matsuzaka, but then with appearances by Josh Edgin, Jeurys Familia, Scott Rice, Carlos Torres and Vic Black threw 8 1/3 scoreless innings striking out 8.  Mejia gave up the winning run without getting an out. He falls to 4-2.  Justin De Fratus gets the win, he’s now 1-0.  Offensively Abreu, Tejada and d’Arnaud had 2 hits apiece. David Wright made an amazing run saving inning ending sliding over the shoulder catch in the bottom of the 4^th on a bloop by Chase Utley.  The Mets modest 3 game win streak is done. They now stand at 25-29 and 12-12 on the road. Saturday afternoon it’s game 3 of the series  Jacob deGrom (0-2  1.83) goes for the Mets, Kyle Kendrick (1-5 4.04) goes for Philadelphia.
