Jayce Boyd rocketed a two-out, three-run double off the left-field wall in the ninth inning to push the Binghamton’s Mets to a thrilling 8-7 walk-off win over the Harrisburg Senators on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton erased three different deficits in their second straight comeback victory.
Trailing 7-5 entering the ninth, the B-Mets caught a break to start a rally. With one out and a runner on first, the Senators failed to convert a potential game-ending double play, opening the door for Binghamton. Reliever Paul Demny loaded the bases by issuing consecutive two-out walks, setting the table for Boyd.
The B-Met outfielder, who delivered a walk-off double to clinch Binghamton’s Eastern League championship in September 2014, blistered Demny’s 1-1 pitch off the leftfield wall. Gavin Cecchini and Brandon Nimmo easily scored while TJ Rivera emphatically slid across home plate with the game-winning run despite the Senators not making a relay throw home.
Boyd’s double capped a resilient night in which the B-Mets erased three different deficits. Harrisburg led 3-1 before Binghamton cut the deficit in half on a T.J. Rivera groundout in the third inning. The B-Mets tied it up an inning later when Aderlin Rodriguez launched his second home run of the season beyond the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth.
Harrisburg broke the 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the sixth off reliever Adam Kolarek. Binghamton responded in the home half, as Eudy Pina tripled in two runs to tie the game once again, this time at 5. It was Pina’s first triple of the season.
The Senators took their third, and final, lead in the eighth inning after Stephen Perez led off with a double and came around to score on a groundout two batters later. Harrisburg added some insurance with a run in the ninth inning on a Perez safety squeeze.
Dario Alvarez (1-1) allowed a run in the ninth inning, his long frame, and earned the win thanks to Binghamton’s comeback. Demny (1-1) took the loss.
Gabriel Ynoa allowed three runs on six hits over five innings of work in the no-decision. Harrisburg starter Tim Alderson allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits in 5-2/3 innings.
The B-Mets (6-3) continue their four-game series with the Harrisburg Senators Saturday afternoon at 1:05 PM. Binghamton RHP Luis Cessa (1-0, 0.00) gets the ball against RHP Matt Swynenberg (0-1, 3.00).
POSTGAME NOTES: It was Binghamton’s first walk-off win since Game 3 of the ELCS vs. Richmond, 9/12/14, when Jayce Boyd delivered the game winning hit…Thursday and Friday were Binghamton’s first two comeback victories of the season, both against Harrisburg…T.J. Rivera was held hitless for the first time this season, but scored the winning run after drawing a walk
