The Binghamton Mets racked up nine hits, but mustered just one run against three Erie SeaWolves pitchers in a 5-1 loss on Wednesday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. The B-Mets rolled into three double plays and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position in the rubber match loss.
Erie forced B-Met starter Matt Koch to labor in the first inning. The SeaWolves loaded the bases four batters into the game on two singles and a walk. Jeff McVaney put the home team on the board by lining a two-run single into center. Koch avoided further damage by retiring the next two batters, stranding two on base.
Gavin Cecchini continued his strong road trip and put Binghamton on the board in the second. Following a leadoff double by Dustin Lawley, the B-Mets shortstop lined a two-out single into right, earning his fourth RBI of the series and seventh of the year.
Erie designated hitter Dean Green struck again in the third. He led off the third by launching his second home run in as many games, depositing a 2-2 pitch from Koch over the right-field wall to cap a nine-pitch at-bat.
The SeaWolves chased Koch from the game with back-to-back two-out singles in the fifth. Reliever Domingo Tapia only added fuel to the fire by allowing the first three batters he faced to reach on two walks and a hit batter. By the time the dust had settled, Erie owned a 5-1 lead.
Binghamton’s offense was handcuffed by Hankins and shortstop Brendan Harris. The veteran infielder jump-started three double plays, killing rallies in the first, fourth and sixth innings. Brennan Smith and Guido Knudson combined for three scoreless inning of relief to secure Erie’s second straight win.
Hankins (1-1) allowed one run while scattering six hits to earn his first win of the season. Koch (0-1) was touched for five runs on eight hits over 4-2/3 innings in the loss.
The B-Mets (4-3) return to the Southern Tier for their home opener against the Harrisburg Senators on Thursday night at6:35 PM. RHP Rainy Lara gets the ball against RHP Paolo Espino.
