The St. Lucie Mets scored a season high in run and matched their season high in hits with a 14-6 thrashing of the Brevard County Manatees on Thursday at Tradition Field.
The Mets bashed out 18 hits, the same amount as in their Opening Day win over Bradenton last Thursday. Every Met had a hit and seven of the nine in the lineup had multi-hit games.
Leading the way was 2013 first round pick Dominic Smith, who came into the game 3 for 27 on the year. Smith went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and a run scored. His two-run opposite field hit with two outs in the first put the Mets on the board.
The Mets ended up scoring five runs in the first inning. Jhoan Urena smacked a two-run double and Colton Plaia extended his hitting streak to five games with an RBI single. Plaia had three hits.
St. Lucie led 7-3 in the middle of the sixth when the rains came and delayed the game for 59 minutes. When play resumed, the Mets knocked around Scott Lieser. Four runs scored on six hits in the sixth and three more scored on three hits in the seventh. Michael Conforto belted a two-run double and Smith and Champ Stuart had RBI hits.
Conforto just missed his second grand slam in as many games when he hit a sac fly with the bases loaded to the warning track in the seventh. He ended up with three RBIs.
Stuart scored four runs. He reached base safely four times after reaching base safely five times on Wednesday.
Jake Kuebler got the win. He threw 2.1 innings of no-hit ball in relief of starter Kevin McGowan. McGowan gave up three runs – two earned – in 3.2 innings.
New York Mets relievers Vic Black and Bobby Parnell pitched the eighth and ninth, respectively. The duo pitched the first and second innings in Tuesday’s game.
Black pitched around a leadoff error in the eighth and retired the next three batters in order.
Parnell gave up two runs with two outs in the ninth on a triple and a double.
After a rough first inning, Woodruff recovered to get through four innings after Wei-Chung Wang lasted just 1.1 innings for Brevard County on Wednesday. Woodruff gave up seven earned runs and seven hits.
In the first two games of their series against the Manatees, the Mets score one run on five hits. In the final two games the Mets scored 23 runs on 30 hits.
