Bob Nightengale USA Today: Mets' sale to Steve Cohen still has one hurdle to clear: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.  “In the 2006 stadium lease agreement between the Mets and New York City, there’s a provision in which the mayor can prohibit the sale of the team to a ‘prohibited person,’ since Citi Field is on New York City owned park land. The lease defines a prohibited person as ‘any person that has been convicted in a criminal proceeding for a felony or any crime involving moral turpitude.’”

Winter Baseball:


A number of double headers in the Mexican Pacific Winter League last night where current Mets minor league players Juan Uriarte and Francisco Rios are playing.


Juan Uriarte played in the second game of a 4-1 loss for the Caneros de los Mochis going 1 for 3 with a strikeout.  Ex-Met Fernando Salas picked up his third save this winter for Naranjeros de Hermosillo with 1 inning, 1 hit, 2 Ks (Box Score).


Francisco Rios went 5 innings 3 runs, 7 hits, 4 walks, 2 Ks to get the win in Game One win for Venados de Mazatlan 4 – 3 over Mayos de Navojoa (Box Score). In two starts this year Francisco is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA.

Ed Kranepool declares his free-agency, ending his 18-year major league career, played entirely with the Mets. The first baseman and pinch-hitter, who signed with the expansion team in 1962 at the age of 17 as an amateur free agent, set franchise records in eight categories, including the most hits (1,418), most games played (1,853), at-bats (5,436), and pinch-hits (90).

1986

After losing the first two games at home, the Mets pull even with the Red Sox in the World Series. Gary Carter's two Fenway Park home runs power New York to a 6-2 victory in Game 4 of the Fall Classic.

 

2000

In Game 2, the Yankees extend their World Series winning streak to 14 consecutive games, defeating the Mets, 6-5, in a game which is overshadowed by Roger Clemens throwing the barrel of a shattered bat at Mike Piazza as the Met catcher runs to first. The eagerly awaited at-bat, due to the Rocket's beaning of the Mets' superstar in July, results in the two players confronting one another and the emptying of both benches.

Rays came to play. With Snell, all is well.

We hoped Matz would be Snell, but all we got in 2020 was Smell.

Robbie Cano would prefer the birthdays JUST SLOW DOWN.

Stroman angling for Yankees after ditching Mets in 2020...why would we want him back?

I am sure when de Blasio sees Cohen, he sees $$ signs. He may therefore try to put certain "conditions" on his approval.

A thought crossed my mind this morning. In addition to signing White Sox catcher McCann for all the baseball reasons, Steve Cohen may want it just to stick his finger in Jerry Reinsdorf's eye for all of his opposition to the sale.

The Mets owe Reinsdorf for taking Tom Seaver in the Free Agent Pool back in the 83-84 season.
