Scouting Report - Mack Pick 1.6 - SS - Marcelo Mayer

Marcelo Mayer

Mack's spin -

Lawler or Mayer? Mayer or Lawler? It really doesn't matter. Mayer is a premier shortstop talent that will participate in this game for a long time.

Mayer has both the offensive and defensive skills to be a star in this game. I happen to think his future is at third, but we will have to wait and see for that possible move.

A great player here.

4. Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS, Chula Vista, Calif.

Areas To Improve: Add strength, show impact, quickness defensively

Mayer has an argument as the best pure hitter in the 2021 prep class, but he could add to his offensive profile by starting to fill out a projectable 6-foot-3 frame and tapping into more in-game power. His swing is currently leveraged well for more power and many scouts already believe he’ll grow into above-average pop down the line. Showing it sooner rather than later would add even more confidence to their projections. While Mayer is a standout defender who slows the game down well, some scouts would like to see a bit more quickness defensively to prove he can stick at shortstop long term.

#4

Boston Red Sox

Marcelo Mayer

SS, Eastlake (HS)

Boston hasn't picked in the top ten since 2015 when they took Andrew Benintendi with the seventh overall pick. Mayer has certainly closed the gap to Jordan Lawlar for the best prep shortstop in this class, and it may come as a bit of a surprise that he goes before Lawlar in this mock. There are plenty of scouts who prefer the upside of Mayer and the body/impact potential over how Lawlar currently projects. Mayer's WWBA performance put a big up arrow next to his name, blistering the baseball all week. Scouts also love how easy Mayer makes it look on defense with smooth actions and buttery hands. So long as the body doesn't outgrow the position, he's a definitive shortstop. He may only be a fringe-average runner by the time he debuts, but that certainly doesn't discount the upside of the bat and defensive package.

Marcelo Mayer

Eastlake HS, Chula Vista, Calif. SS

Ht: 6-3 | Wt: 185 | B-T: L-R

Commit/Drafted: Southern California

Age At Draft: 18.6

Mayer is the next big prospect to come out of a powerhouse Eastlake (Calif.) High program that has produced Adrian Gonzalez, 2020 second-rounder Casey Schmitt (by way of San Diego State) and more recently, first-rounder Keoni Cavaco in 2019. Mayer started getting attention from scouts at Eastlake as a freshman, where he showed a smooth lefthanded stick at the plate and advanced defensive actions up the middle. Mayer is arguably the top defensive shortstop in a class that is deep at the position. He glides around the infield dirt with silky smooth actions and has the hands, footwork and arm strength to stick at the position long term. He always seems to slow the game down, and has no problem throwing from multiple angles with an accurate arm. A 6-foot-3, 185-pound Southern California commit, Mayer also has upside offensively. He has fringe-average power now, but evaluators believe he could tap into above-average power down the line and he controls the zone well with a swing that’s leveraged for fly balls.

Marcelo Mayer, SS

Nearly everybody in the industry agrees Mayer isn’t perfect, but he’ll end up at SS or 3B, has a highly ideal frame projectability-wise, and can hit for average/power. He’s drawn comparisons to Corey Seager and they fit. If Perry wants upside, a high(er) floor relative to his high school peers, Mayer is the perfect guy, and if he’s available at 9, it’s a slam dunk pick for the first-year GM.

Mayer was an underclassman when scouts started getting live-looks on him thanks to his double play partner, Keoni Cavaco drawing scouts to games en route to him getting selected 13th overall in 2019 by the Twins. All signs are pointing to Mayer going higher than Cavaco, and the overwhelming belief is that he’s the superior talent. Mayer moved around the field in Fort Myers at the WWBA – including time in CF – but primarily played SS.

He wasn’t at his best that week, but his best game came in front of at least three amateur directors, including two that pick in the range that will have a shot at him. He should provide conventional value all-around the field, being an above average fielder & runner, but his offensive profile tops them both, a plus hit tool and growing power tool (lack of loft) should appease teams selecting at the top half of the draft, though there’s some tweaking needed to be done in order to generate more than just the gap-to-gap average power he’s showing in-games.

Fantastic extension & hip/torso separation play into his quick lateral rotation. The combination of athleticism & natural inclined feel for the bat should fall somewhere in the middle of the first round, if not earlier. He’s also a USC commit.

Chula Vista, California SS Marcelo Mayer with some winter BP. Really saw his stock gain a ton of helium toward the end of the summer, especially after WWBA. Really impacting the ball, especially pull-side these last few months. Expect him to go very early in the 2021 MLB Draft

9. Los Angeles Angels: Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake (Calif.) HS

Mayer impressed scouts on the showcase circuit last summer to enhance his draft status. He has a balanced set of tools and will stick at shortstop long-term. Mayer’s best tool is his hitting ability, as he uses a smooth and easy left-handed swing to consistently barrel up pitches and drive the ball to all fields.

Washington Nationals

The Nats have shown that they aren’t afraid of taking risks, and in their spot, a top 10 talent that tumbles would most likely find a home here. With a system flush in arm talent, it might be time to look at a bat, and two prep shortstops stand out as candidates. Marcelo Mayer has a high offensive and defensive IQ with an above average bat profile that could grow more power potential and quick twitch instincts and solid arm strength that will serve him well in keeping him at shortstop. Interestingly enough, Mayer was high school teammates with 2019 Twins first round pick Keoni Cavaco.

8. Colorado Rockies: Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (CA)

This is the year of the prep shortstop and Colorado gets in on the action early. Mayer displays average or better tools in every area and will definitely stay at the position long-term. He possesses a feel to hit from the LH side and displays an advanced approach as well. Marcelo is an above-average runner with raw power as well. He could go higher than this.

8. Rockies: Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (Chula Vista, Calif.)

The best pure hitter in the prep class, Mayer has drawn some Corey Seager comparisons as a bigger shortstop with power projection and the tools to stay at the position. He won't match Adrián González (No. 1 overall in 2000) as the highest pick in Eastlake history, but could catch Lawlar to be the first high schooler taken in July.

12. Seattle Mariners | Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS | (2/41) Max Debiec, RHP, O’Dea HS

Mayer was on a short list at the top of our board as we viewed him as a top ten pick. With him still available at 12 it was a no brainer as he brings a shortstop profile with a middle of the order type bat. Debiec is a guy we have gotten plenty of looks at being from right here in Seattle. He brings a projectable 6-foot-7 frame with a mid-90s fastball and a feel for two distinct breaking balls as well as a changeup with some deception from his quick arm. -Colt Olinger

Cervino’s Take: Marcelo Mayer is potentially the top prep prospect in the class and grabbing him along with hometown prep arm Max Debiec. Mayer is a classic Southern California shortstop and fits that profile of athleticism, shortstop projection, and a polished hit tool. Debiec is a massive right-hander that offers substantial projection and should develop nicely given the time in a Mariner’s system that has turned out solid pitching in the past.

10.  SS Marcelo Mayer

School: East Lake HS, CA | Commit: USC | B / T: L / R | Ht: 6’3 | Wt: 188lbs | Age: 18.5

An all-around good athlete, with some room to add some good weight/strength to the frame. Pair that with one of the better approaches and a Plus (60) Hit Tool. Showing a smooth, consistent swing with jump off the bat from the left side. However, the bat path is rather flat but has been showing more loft as of late and projects for League-Average (50) Power, with the potential for more as he tinkers with his bat path as he enters pro ball to tap into that power more consistently.

As good as he is in the box, he shows equally as solid defensively at SS as a (55) Defender with a (60) Arm that’s capable of making most any throw on the infield.

I don't think any of the guys I have ranked so far would fall that low.

These are prime beef.
