Mack' Mock Pick - 1.19 - OF - Ethan Wilson

Ethan Wilson

Mack's spin -

Wilson is a very good baseball player. He is a bat first prospect that has the potential to be one of the really good ones, not one of the great ones.

He also has serious defensive limitations, especially with his sub arm.

Still, he is one of the top bats in this draft and that will get him picked in the first round.

21. Ethan Wilson, OF, South Alabama

South Alabama is a pro-ball factory. In addition to serving as a launching pad for former All-Stars like Luis Gonzalez, David Freese, Lance Johnson, and Jon Lieber, the Jaguars have had 10 players popped in the past six drafts. The next South Alabama player to join the ranks will be Wilson, who has put himself on the radar by hitting .330/.425/.632 with 20 homers and 24 stolen bases for his collegiate career. Scouts have some concern about his long-term defensive value (he's a left fielder) and the stiffness in his swing, which has resulted in a 20-percent K rate. His feel for the zone and for hard contact should still enable him to go sometime in the first round.

Player of the Year: Ethan Wilson, OF, South Alabama

Wilson was voted a first-team Preseason All-American by major league scouting directors and is a projected first-round pick. He can do a bit of everything at the plate and hit .282/.329/.465 with three home runs and six stolen bases. He has a lot to live up to between his draft status and winning both the conference’s player and freshman of the year awards in 2019, but he has the tools to be one of the best hitters in the country.

2-4-21 - BA -

When the Pirates selected South Alabama outfielder Travis Swaggerty 10th overall in 2018, it was just the second time in 27 years that a Jaguar was drafted among the top 10 picks in the draft.

But luckily for the South Alabama program, it won’t have to wait that long again. That’s because third-year sophomore outfielder Ethan Wilson projects as a top 10 overall pick this summer if he continues his current trajectory.

The pandemic may have cost him most of last season and a summer showcase opportunity in the Cape Cod League or with USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team, but it has barely put a dent in Wilson’s draft stock. Thanks to his loud offensive tools, he was voted a Preseason All-American by major league scouting directors and enters the 2021 season as one of the most exciting hitters in all of college baseball.

Areas To Improve: Make the most of supplemental tools, continue mashing

In a normal year, Wilson would have likely had an opportunity to prove his bat and power in either the Cape Cod League or with the Collegiate National Team. Without those opportunities, it’ll be interesting to see what scouts do with a corner profile, Sun Belt Conference masher. He’ll need to continue hitting at a high level over a full season after a bit of a blip last spring in 18 games, and while he’s unlikely to provide much value from his defensive or running, getting the most out of those tools could help alleviate some of the pressure that is sure to be on his bat.

Another top outfield prospect the Marlins might consider taking at 16 is Ethan Wilson out of South Alabama. The Marlins would be getting a good left-handed hitter with above-average power but is limited defensively.

Wilson had a tremendous freshman season batting .345 and broke five-time All-Star Luis Gonzalez’s freshman home run record. He smashed 17 home runs as a freshman and also posted a 1.139 OPS.

Wilson is a career .330 hitter but also has good plate discipline and draws lots of walks. Offensively, Wilson projected to be an everyday player due his hitting tools and his ability to hit left-handers well.

As for his defense, Wilson is pretty limited and projects to play left field at the next level. He has below average speed and arm strength but an average glove. If the Marlins draft Wilson, he’ll be another quality bat to their farm system and could be a player who rises through their farm system quickly if he produces at the dish.

New York Yankees

Ethan Wilson

OF, South Alabama

A name that often gets lost in the shuffle of the recent helium names on public draft boards is Wilson. A strong performer his freshman year with South Alabama, a mediocre performance in the shortened 2020 season and some questions around his quality of competition have dulled the buzz a touch. Make no mistake, Wilson can hit. It might be plus power, optimized to drive the ball with impact and loft. Wilson's approach seemed to back up from his freshman season at South Alabama when he ran away with the Sun Belt Player of the Year award. The Yankees land another proven College bat in the mold of 2020 pick Austin Wells.

Wilson exploded onto the college baseball scene in 2019, hitting .345/.453/.686 and making his way onto the freshman All-American first team. With 17 home runs, Wilson was just one homer shy of the first team home run leader Aaron Sabato, whom the Twins selected in the first round in 2020. Wilson has big, bold check marks next to the two most important tools thanks to his hitting ability and power, and scouts think he’s solidly in the first round mix because of that. He has a heady, consistent approach at the dish and draws a solid number of walks—Wilson has a 12% walk rate in his South Alabama career—to go with his gaudy power numbers. Even as a left fielder, where Wilson is most likely to end up, he has the hitting ability and power to profile and become an impact, middle-of-the-order bat at the next level. Playing in the Sun Belt Conference, he will get critiqued for not having performed against better pitching, so missing a chance to hit in the Cape Cod League or with Team USA might hurt the 6-foot-2, 210-pound lefthanded slugger more than others, but he’s done nothing but perform with the opportunities he’s been given.

Ethan Wilson is known for his loud bat as a power-hitting, left-handed swinging outfielder. He has an advanced approach at the plate and can draw walks well while finding the barrel and getting base hits.

MLB Pipeline has Wilson ranked as their No. 23 Draft Prospect heading into 2021, but that could change depending on how the spring season shakes out.

Defensively, it sounds like Wilson doesn’t have a great throwing arm and will be limited to left field as a pro, which is a spot currently occupied by Christian Yelich, another left-handed power hitter.

15. Milwaukee Brewers: Ethan Wilson, OF, South Alabama

Scouts rank Wilson’s offensive tools, especially his power, as his best traits. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound left-handed hitting outfielder generates loft in his swing and consistently displays above-average power. He also has a strong understanding of the strike zone and typically remains patient at the plate. Wilson will play a corner outfield position in pro ball.

Cleveland Indians

Despite selling off two major pieces of their rotation, the Indians still managed to put together a strong season on the back of Shane Bieber. Whether or not they decide they are still capable of competing for the division or are in rebuild mode, they still can take advantage of a faller in this year’s draft. While Ethan Wilson could find himself going higher on account of his strong lefthanded stick and above average power, he is limited defensively to left field. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as he’s a capable defender there, if a little weaker in arm strength. Still Wilson is valuable in his ability to get good contact off lefthanded pitching, giving him staying power in any lineup.

15. Milwaukee Brewers: Ethan Wilson, OF, South Alabama

Milwaukee goes back to college for an outfielder for the second straight year with Wilson. The outfielder struggled during the abbreviated 2020 season, but he did hit 17 homers for South Alabama in 2019. He hits left-handed and draws walks, but probably will need some swing alterations to tap into his power more consistently. He likely only has a throwing arm for left field, but he profiles there offensively as well.

Ethan Wilson, OF, South Alabama

Wilson had one of the best freshman campaigns in recent memory and profiles well as a power-hitting corner outfielder at the next level. He’s near the top of the list in terms of college bats for this year’s draft cycle as the physical tools speak for themselves regarding his frame, bat speed, and massive power potential.

5. Ethan Wilson, OF, South Alabama: Wilson’s high exit velocities and loft in his swing combine to give him at least 60 power; however, high swing-and-miss rates on breaking stuff translate into a best-case average hit tool. He’s an adept fielder in LF and might even play some CF next spring.

Why would Ethan Wilson be a first rounder and Pete Alonso a second rounder?

I'd take Wilson in the 2nd round.

Alonso played horrible defense in college which elliminated any chance of him being a first round pick.

Also...first rounders have the same chance as running backs being named in the first round.
