Reid-Foley, Nogosek pitch scoreless innings in rehab outings
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 29, 2021) – The Daytona Tortugas broke a 3-3 tie by scoring six runs in the ninth inning and then held on in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the St. Lucie Mets 9-6 Sunday afternoon at Clover Park.
Danny Lantigua, Brandon Leyton, Justice Thompson and Daniel Vellojin hit consecutive RBI doubles with one out in the ninth to put Daytona up 7-3. Rece Hinds capped the inning when he launched a towering two-run home run off Kolby Kubichek to make it 9-3.
The five consecutive extra base hits came against Kubichek, who had retired six of the previous eight batters.
The Mets fought back by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Alex Ramirez and Brandon McIlwain hit back-to-back RBI singles with the bases loaded. JT Schwartz hit a run-scoring ground out for the second out to make it 9-6.
Justin Guerrera came up as the tying run and flew out to center field to end the game.
Sean Reid-Foley (elbow) made a MLB rehab start. He pitched a scoreless first inning. He walked two but did not give up a hit.
Stephen Nogosek (shoulder) followed Reid-Foley for his second MLB rehab appearance of the series and tossed a scoreless second inning with one hit.
Ramirez went 2 for 4 with a double, walk, RBI and run in the loss.
Hinds hit two home runs in the win for Daytona.
The Mets (52-47) are off on Monday. They return to action on Tuesday when they begin a six-game road series against the Jupiter Hammerheads. First pitch on Tuesday from Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
