Mack - Draft Thoughts: Maxwell Romero, Zack Neto, Kevin Parada, Dylan Lesko, Jackson Ferris

8--14-21 - Cal Friedman @friedman_cal

Former Vanderbilt catcher Maxwell Romero Jr. has transferred to Miami, per Romero.

The Pembroke Pines native batted .300 with 4 HR’s and 14 RBI for the Commodores in 2021, playing in 21 games, starting in 15.

Big get for Canes Baseball after C Adrian Del Castillo was drafted.

This is quite a surprise. Romero backed up CJ Rodriguez in 2021, but most figured he'd be featured as the starting catcher in 2022. Hit well for Vandy in 2021

tennessian -

Romero, who did not appear in a game in 2020, started 15 games last season while backing up starter CJ Rodriguez. He batted .300 with four home runs and 14 RBIs, including seven RBIs in a 3-for-3 breakout performance against Georgia State on Feb. 22.

Mack's spin -

The only other thing I have currently on Romero is that Fangraphs ranks him as the 98th pick in this draft.

This isn't enough yet to warrant a slot on my board.

 8-13-21 - Cam Lanzilli @LanzilliCam

Sit back and watch it! Zack Neto (2022 elig.) gets every bit of this one for a 2-run BOMB. Really fun player to watch at the plate and on the dirt. Love the actions at SS and a ton of juice in the bat.

 Mack's spin -

2021 Campbell stat line - 44-G, 173-AB, .405/.488/.746/12-HR, 58-RBI, only 30-K

Like I have always said, don't fall in love with small school stats. Still, these are impressive.

That being said, I have him as an early 6th SS pick.

8-12-21 - Talking Chop - Georgia Prospects -

Kevin Parada, C, Georgia Tech -

Kevin Parada was a potential first round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft who decided to become the next in a long line of great Yellow Jacket catchers and nothing he did as a freshman this past spring has changed that. The sophomore eligible backstop hit .318/.379/.550 with nine homers and will be a candidate to be the top overall pick as a potentially special offensive catcher.

 Mack's spin -

Parada will be the first catcher to come off the board and maybe the only one in the first round.

2021 GT stat line - 52-G, 220-AB, team leading .318, 9-HR, 42-RBI, 41-K

8-8-21 - BA  -

Dylan Lesko, RHP (Georgia)

He throws a fastball in the 91-95 mph range and touched 96 multiple times in both outings, with 1900-2300 rpm spin rates on the heater.

Lesko throws a high-spin breaking ball in the 78-81 mph range, which has recorded spin rates in the 2700-3000 rpm range this summer. The pitch has three-quarter shape and plenty of depth and hard finish, but he has spiked the pitch and buried it out of the zone at times.

His changeup is his most consistent offering and potentially his best current pitch, in addition to arguably the best changeup in the entire class.

Mack's spin -

We will write a lot about Lesko over the next 9 months.

Currently my #3 RHP but might be pushed a slot up as the mock season develops.

 8-5-21 - Prospects Live

 Jackson Ferris

Last summer, Jackson Ferris was sitting 88-91 MPH with his fastball at the Area Code Underclass games. Shortly thereafter, he transferred from Mount Airy, NC to IMG Academy in Florida and his velocity ticked up significantly. He’s held it so far this summer and at PG National, the heater was exceptional. He sat 92-95 MPH and touched 96 MPH with the heater and racked up all six strikeouts on the pitch. It has great late life and kept hitters confused the whole outing. The curveball was in the high-70’s and Ferris manipulated the shape of it at times, though it did become slurvy. He did flash a change-up in the mid-80’s that has progressed well. We are going to keep a close eye on his progress this cycle.

Mack's spin -

There is no better prep school to play for than the IMG Academy in Florida. If you are playing there, you are a good baseball player.

Prospect Live has him slotted as the 53rd player on their board.

I'm a little behind this and have him as my 7th southpaw.
