Mack - 2022 MLB Draft Scouting Report - LHP - Noah Schultz

Noah Schultz

Mack's spin -

Noah is a big dude, and unlike most pitchers in this size range, he doesn't have that many moving parts that scream of future problems.

Another Vandy commit (I finally figured out the Vandebilt plan each year. Commit at least 10 star prep pitchers with the hopes of three not going pro).

Current, Schultz is on my board as my 6th LHP.

8-8-21 - BA  -

Noah Schultz, LHP (Illinois)

A 6-foot-9, 220-pound lefthander, Schultz is one of the tallest pitchers in the 2022 class, but he has shown standout athleticism and body control that make him a dangerous southpaw with stuff and the ability to harness it and throw it for strikes. It’s common for very tall pitchers—especially those who are still teenagers—to struggle to repeat their deliveries, stay in sync and put the ball over the plate, but Schultz did all of that at PG National and the PDP League.

He works out of a half windup and throws from a sidearm slot, which creates a tough angle in its own right but is only magnified due to his height and long levers.

The Vanderbilt commit has a three-pitch mix with a fastball that has been in the 89-93 mph range with running life, a mid-70s breaking ball with plenty of spin and sweeping depth and a straight change in the 78-80 mph range that he uses less frequently than his fastball/breaking ball combination. Schultz’s breaking ball will back up on him to his arm side at times, but looks like a real weapon that should always be a pain for lefthanded hitters, and he’s shown an impressive ability to spot and land the pitch.

Noah Schultz

If you’re looking for the funkiest and most uncomfortable AB in the class, then look no further than Vanderbilt commit Noah Schultz. Standing a hulking 6’8”, 215 lb while working out a low three quarters slot is not something you see very often. Schultz showed two above average to plus pitches in his outing in St. Pete with a 90-92 mph fastball that he could command anywhere in the zone with elite spin rates and a breaking ball that sat in the low to mid 70s with a ton of swing and miss. Breaker was consistently around 3000 RPMs as well. The combination of Schultz's frame and his ability to repeat his delivery tells me there’s plenty more in the tank and gives the lefty considerable upside in this strong prep pitching class

7-27-21 - Prospect Love Top 100 2022 Prospects -

# 81 Noah Schultz LHP Oswego

Schultz is an ultra projectable behemoth at 6'8", 210 pounds. For a kid his size, he repeats his delivery well and certainly has a good feel for pitching. There's some real funk coming from a low, short-arm vertical release, reminiscent of Max Scherzer's release. His fastball velocity has been 89-91 MPH and has touched 93 MPH with serious life. He has a slurvy breaking ball with massive spin rates, as well as a slider in the mid-to-high 70's and a good fading change-up in the low-80's. There's a ton to dream on from this southpaw and the funk, deception and spin rates suggest a super-high ceiling.

5-18-21 - PG -

Noah Schultz (Ill.)

6-9/220 L/L

Commitment: Vanderbilt

PG Events: 8

Key Stats: 18 2/3 innings pitched, 24 strikeouts, 1.39 WHIP

Short Story: Schultz possesses the most physical projection in the class and already sports a heater in the low-90s. Every time we see him he seems to make strides in command and stuff. Nothing would surprise this summer as he has seemingly endless potential.

Big Moment: At the 2020 PG Junior National Schultz threw at 8 am and brought some of the best stuff of the event. It was funky, loud, deceptive, and spectacular to scout. He gave virtually zero chance for hitters to find a barrel. It was a sign of things to come as his summer stayed on par with that performance

Bold Prediction: Added strength helps him truly repeat, allowing him to go deep in outings and build on a strong 2020. The velocity is going to come and doesn’t need to be rushed, the stuff is coming.

30. Noah Schultz - LHP

Bio:

Height: 6-8

Weight: 205 lbs

Hits/Throws: L-L

Hometown: Aurora, Illinois

School: Oswego (IL)

Schultz is an ultra projectable behemoth at 6'8", 210 pounds. For a kid his size, he repeats his delivery well and certainly has a good feel for pitching. His fastball velocity this summer has been 88-91 MPH and has touched 92 MPH with serious life. He has a slurvy breaking ball that has become more of a slider in the mid-to-high 70's and a good fading change-up in the low-80's.

11-27-20 - PG -

Schultz is every left-handed hitter’s worst nightmare and not much better for right-handed hitters, either.  The 6-foot-8, 205 pound southpaw throws from a mid to low-3/4 arm slot with a fastball that will reach 92 mph, with plenty more velocity to come, to go with a high spin rate knee buckling slider.  It’s impossible not to think of Randy Johnson and what he was like at the same age when watching Schultz on the mound.
