Open thread - the 2022 All-star game

In a little more than 5 weeks, the MLB all-star game will be held in Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.

The Mets have had many lean years in terms of all-star team representation, sending only one player 22 times in their 60-year history.  The most they have ever sent was in their 2006 season when six players wore the Mets uniform on the field (Beltran, Reyes, Wright, Martinez, Glavine, and LoDuca).

This year they have one of the best clubs in the NL, so lots of players should go, right?  Well, maybe not.  With this year’s “all-for-one” approach, many players contribute to the W’s every day, but there are few dominant players (like Pete) that stand out above their peers.  Both stud starting pitchers are out.

McNeil and Canha are in the top 10 National Leaguers for batting average, but I don’t see a consensus of baseball fans nationwide to elect those two.  Nimmo joins McNeil and Canha in the top-20 in OBP.  Who else stands out?  Lindor with a .250 batting average?  Carrasco with his NL-leading 7 wins?

You tell us: cast your votes (opinions) in the comments – who makes the team from the NY Mets this year?

It’s a compliment for the team and much motivation for the players, if they have few all-stars. I understand the recognition, but we need to see the big picture and not the egos. The Giants and Rays don’t get much love either.

Pete, Nimmo Lindor, Cookie & Diaz are all possibilities.

The Mets have several deserving players but it will be interesting to see how the public weighs in.
Pete Alonso should be a slam dunk, but Paul Goldschmidt is having a heck of a season and will give him a run.
Edwin Diaz should be a slam dunk because he has been a dominant closer, but so is Josh Hader, and guys like Jansen, Rodgers, and Kimbrell are also putting up great numbers.
Nimmo has the best Avg, OBP, and OPS of any center fielder in the NL. Canha has the best Avg, 2nd OBP, and 6th OPS of left fielders in the NL. Are they worthy? Yes. Do they have enough name recognition to carry the vote? Not sure.
Lindor is playing well and earning back the Mets fans. But as NL shortstops go, Trea Turner and Dansby Swanson are having better seasons statistically.
Similarly, Carrasco is atop the NL in wins with 7, but there are nine other pitchers that sport either 6 or 7 wins, and many have superior ERAs to Cookie's 3.52.
My prediction is that the Mets land three players but only Pete starts.

Paul, as of now, that seems prescient.
