The Mack Report - Sunday, June 26th

Yesterday's game thoughts  -

Another road win to fight off the wins by both the Braves and Phillies. This was another night of individual efforts. The day before it was Francisco Lindor. This time, it was Pete Alonso. Isn't it strange that the guys that always step up are the stars of your team?

In a day in which the best team in baseball was no-hit, the Mets also got stellar one inning relief stints from Seth Lugo and Edwin Diaz, who dished up a couple of 102-mph fastballs.

        Do we sweep today?

First up, let’s continue out talks about expiring contracts.

Today, we look at the Detroit Tigers.

RHRP Michael Fulmer is a 29/yr. Old ex-Mets that was traded for Yoenis Cespedes in 2015.

So far in 2022, he has generated a 0.9-WAR, going 2-2, 2.08, in 26 appearances. He also has 110 strikeouts in 132.1-IP which walking 46.

Fulmer can no longer help the rotation, but he sure could fit in as a righty upgrade in the pen. His 2022 salary is $4.95mil and he will be a free agent next season.

Wily Peralta is a 33-yr. old RHRP being paid only $2.5mil this season before becoming a free agent in 2023.

So far this season, he has generated a 0.7-WAR, going 2-0, 1.91, in 19-G, 28.1-IP and 24-K. His downfall has been the 18-BB he has given up.

Still, better than some righties in our current pen.

No lefties, but some righty reliever food for thought.

In draft news, reader Texas Gus and I have been throwing names of starters in the first round hat that we both are in love with, either at 1.11 or 1.14.

Gus likes Alabama LHP Connor Prielipp, while my favorites are Tennessee’s RHP Blade Tidwell or American Heritage HS (FL) LHP Brandon Barriera.

However, there are others to consider.

Robbie Snelling is a 6-3 LHP, out of McQueen HS (NV).

MLB.com says this about Snelling:

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 60 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 50 | Overall: 55

Last summer, Snelling hit the showcase circuit as a big, strong left-handed pitcher who was also a big-time football recruit. Originally planning on heading to Arizona to play both sports, he changed gears when Jay Johnson was named Louisiana State's head coach. Snelling switched his commitment, and with it, the chance to play football at the next level. This spring, he’s continued to show he has a strong future on the mound.

Snelling is a big, physical presence on the mound, one who shook off tacklers as a quarterback and punished offensive players as a linebacker. The 6-foot-3 left-hander has plenty of fastball, routinely up to 94 mph, touching as high as 97 over the summer. His best pitch is his curveball and he can really spin it, a plus breaker thrown in the upper 70s that misses a ton of bats. He has a changeup that has the chance to be average, but he doesn’t use it much.

In addition to the strong fastball-curve combination, Snelling does a very good job of filling up the strike zone. He brings a football mentality to the mound and has the frame to be able to handle a starting pitcher’s workload. Scouting directors have spent a lot of time in Reno, and it’s possible Snelling goes high enough to not follow Johnson to LSU.

I would take Fulmer back - the pen is good, but could be stronger.

He's a good guy

I always remember when the Mets sent him back to NYC for X-ray and the mother of one his teammates alerted me he was heading to the plane.

I broke it and when Michael's plane landed he checked his mail and his phone exploded.

Asked me how I knew and I said I couldn't tell him.

If you are reading Michael, you know now.

Supposedly, Jake was throwing 99 in that stint…not sure if that is hearsay.

Ottavino was getting despised on FBearlier in the season…which is why crucifixions over a guys first few weeks is nuts. Ottavino has been very useful.

Fulmer? As long as we don’t have to take Java Baez. I still think Montes de Oca might be as close as a month away.

Jake hit 99.9 on his last pitch.

Mack can Jake be as efective throwing 95+ based on his injury situation kind of Max like? Great Fulmer story. Also hasn't my favorite guy Lindor been great just like I've been saying.....:)
